UC Santa Cruz Class of 2030 in Historical Perspective

We don’t yet know how competitive the Class of 2030 was, but based on the historical data above, it wouldn’t be all that surprising if it produced the highest acceptance rate of the last decade. Wait, what? Whereas most elite schools have seen decreasing acceptance rates during the past decade, the opposite is true at UC Santa Cruz. Great news for students with their sights set on becoming Banana Slugs (yes, that’s what they call UC Santa Cruz students!), no-so-great news for UC Santa Cruz admissions officers, who would rather see their school gain the prestige that comes with high selectivity.

However, you may notice that this upward trend in acceptance rate has corresponded to a greater volume of students being admitted to UCSC each year, which typically connotes one of two things: either that UC Santa Cruz’s capacity for admitted students has increased over time (such as with the construction of new student housing or a faculty hiring campaign), or the yield rate has decreased over time (meaning that a dwindling percentage of admitted students enroll each year). In either case, the result is the same. UC Santa Cruz is easier than ever to get into!
