This member of the prestigious University of California system recently rendered decisions for the Class of 2030, and even though we don’t yet know the specific admissions statistics, there’s still plenty of data from which we can conjecture whether this year set any new records for this public research university. UC Santa Barbara Class of 2030 in Historical Perspective

The acceptance rate to UC Santa Barbara charted over time is a bit all over the place. In some years, such as the record-setting Class of 2026, about 1 in 4 applicants were admitted. In other years, such as the recent Class of 2029, the acceptance rate neared 40%. Many schools of UC Santa Barbara’s caliber have reported declining acceptance rates and higher selectivity, while others have seen the opposite trend. But UCSB doesn’t appear to be following any clear trend, either way. So whether the Class of 2030 will set a new record for the acceptance rate or prove disappointing to admission officers at UC Santa Barbara remains to be seen.

Could there be a clue in the number of students applying each year? This figure has indeed risen over time, but acceptance rates haven’t declined in turn because UC Santa Barbara has admitted larger and larger cohorts of students each year. Why would they do so, when simply admitting the same number of students they did ten years ago would produce a highly selective acceptance rate? Could the declining yield rate be the culprit? The decline in the yield rate over this window would mean fewer admitted students are enrolling each year. This would necessitate admissions officers to admit larger numbers of students each year to match declining interest in matriculating.
