SMU Class of 2030 Statistics in Historical Perspective

Even though the specifics of this year’s admissions cycle to SMU are still under wraps, the trends in applications laid out in the graph above couldn’t be clearer. Applications to Southern Methodist University have been on an upward trajectory for quite some time, with the recent Class of 2029 producing a record-setting applicant pool of 24,053 that more or less doubled the volume of applications SMU received ten years prior. However, this rise in applications hasn’t necessarily been accompanied by a decline in the acceptance rate. While the Class of 2029 was indeed the most selective year on record for SMU, with 47.64% of applicants receiving an acceptance letter, just one year prior, for the Class of 2028 (in which a healthy 15,245 students applied), this figure sat at 63.35%, while the mid-2010s routinely produced acceptance rates in the high 40-50% range.

In other words, the Southern Methodist University admission cycle appears to be prone to some pretty intense shifts from year to year in acceptance rate that can’t always be tied to the applicant pool.
