Lafayette Class of 2030 Statistics in Historical Perspective

Does it get harder to get into Lafayette College with each year that passes? Not definitively. The Class of 2030, in which a record 10,901 students applied and 3,518 were admitted, produced a 32.27% acceptance rate, which is about average for Lafayette College over the last five years. But how could this be possible if a record number of students applied? Wouldn’t that result in a correspondingly low acceptance rate? Not exactly. While the volume of applications received each year has indeed skyrocketed at Lafayette College, this hasn’t led to a decline in the acceptance rate because the number of admitted students has risen in tandem with the overall number of applications.

This begs the question, why would Lafayette admissions officers feel the need to admit increasingly large cohorts of students to a campus that presumably does not grow any larger each year? Well, while it’s possible that Lafayette has been building some new dorms, the most likely scenario is that the yield rate, or proportion of admitted students who end up enrolling, has declined over time. This would necessitate larger and larger cohorts of admitted students to proactively account for lower interest in each batch of admits, with the overall goal of enrolling roughly the same number of students from year to year.

Profile of Lafayette College Admits to the Class of 2030

While we don’t yet know the specific demographics of admits to the Class of 2030, The Lafayette (campus’ student-run newspaper) published a breakdown of the demographic composition of the applicants to the Class of 2030 as follows:

“A February email sent by several members of college admissions reported 4,165 international student applications — another record figure for the college — marking a 6.5% increase over last year’s application cycle. The college also reported a large increase in Southwest applications and prospective engineering students.

[A Lafayette official] highlighted that domestic applications came from all regions of the United States, with typically strong application numbers coming from the college’s “backyard” of New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. The college also saw a 37.9% increase in applications from the Southeast, West Coast and Texas compared to last year.”
