Hoya-lujah! Georgetown University recently announced admissions statistics for the Class of 2029, which reveal a fairly good showing by America’s most prestigious and oldest Jesuit institution of higher learning. Georgetown received a respectable 26,900 applications to join the Class of 2030, of which they admitted 13%, according to The Hoya, Georgetown’s student-run newspaper. How do these figures stack up to past admissions cycles and other elite schools this year? Read on to find out!

Georgetown University Class of 2030 in Historical Perspective

Georgetown admissions officers are likely feeling reassured, if somewhat ambivalent, about these results. With roughly 26,900 applications, there were 78 or so more than the previous year, and the acceptance rate decreased slightly from 13.49% to 13%. While these figures didn’t set new records, they show an even keel in the admissions process. However, the prevailing trend this year, particularly among the top Southern colleges in the nation, has been to set new records in acceptance and number of applications. Georgetown’s middling performance amidst this year’s triumph at other schools is just that: middling!

Take Emory University, the University of Virginia, Duke University, and Vanderbilt University. All are schools in the South that have reported record-setting applicant pools this year. But Georgetown? The private Jesuit research university located in Washington, D.C., hasn’t set a record for most applicants since the Class of 2025. Don’t get us wrong, Georgetown came pretty close to breaking this record this year, but alas, no cigar!

Next year, when Georgetown finally makes the long-awaited transition to conducting its admissions process through the Common Application, we wouldn’t be all that surprised if applications surge, as students will finally be able to apply with ease on a portal shared by almost all other top schools. But for now, Georgetown is left in the dust.

Profile of the Georgetown University Admits to the Class of 2029

According to reporting by The Hoya, “The admitted class includes students from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Guam, American Samoa, and Puerto Rico, along with students attending schools in 58 other countries.” Beyond these sparse details, we don’t know much about this batch of admitted students. In a post-Affirmative Action world, colleges are much less forthcoming about their admissions data to avoid undue scrutiny. Jesuit values or not, Georgetown is no exception to this rule, which is why we don’t know the racial, socioeconomic, or gender demographics of the Class of 2029.

Last year, Georgetown admitted a slightly less diverse cohort of students to the Class of 2028 in its first post-SCOTUS ruling admissions cycle than in previous years. According to an official press release, there were fewer Black, Asian, and Hispanic students in the Class of 2028 than in previous admission cycles. We don’t yet know if this will remain the case this year. Still, one thing is sure: students of color can and should take advantage of the Roberts Loophole when applying to highly selective colleges, as it allows race to remain a focal point of all written material submitted in applications. It’s a way to circumvent the SCOTUS ruling in your favor!
