Colby College, a member of the prestigious Bowdoin, Bates, Colby consortium of Maine-based liberal arts colleges, is a popular choice for academically distinguished students seeking a slower pace of life, a smaller campus environment, and proximity to nature. But just how competitive is the admissions process? Colby College’s Class of 2030 in Historical Perspective

This year, a record number of high school students sent in applications. And while we don’t know the precise number of these students who were offered admission, a Colby College press release states that the acceptance rate was 8.00% this year, matching the 8.00% acceptance rate reported for the Class of 2029. Historical acceptance rate data could contextualize just how record-breaking this year’s applicant pool was and whether this 8.00% acceptance rate is an anomaly or in line with recent trends (beyond just the year before). But for now, it’s safe to assume that Colby College is falling in line with other elite schools that have reported declining acceptance during the past decade.

The Demographics of the Colby College Class of 2030

Colby College has been surprisingly forthcoming about the demographics of its incoming class. Surprising both because of the institution’s reluctance to keep an online record of Common Data Sets, which would appear to indicate it would prefer not to share such info, but also because many schools have opted to withhold this information entirely this year, as colleges across the country tighten up their admissions processes so as to avoid undue media scrutiny in a brave new world where colleges are constantly stricken with PR crises. 

While Colby hasn’t reported any racial demographic information on the Class of 2030, as doing so would be in direct violation of the 2023 SCOTUS ruling outlawing the use of race-based Affirmative Action, here’s what the school did share about this new crop of Mules in a press release: “Students admitted to the Class of 2030 represent all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and nearly 70 countries, from Uzbekistan to Slovakia to Lesotho, a country in southern Africa. Their academic qualifications place them at the top of their respective high school classes, with median SAT scores of 1510 and median ACT scores of 34.”
