The Ivy Coach Daily
Bowdoin GPA Requirements
Bowdoin College, arguably the crown jewel of the Colby, Bates, and Bowdoin liberal arts consortium, is the Maine-based liberal arts college of many students’ dreams. However, with this stellar reputation comes high admissions competition, in which many students with excellent grades and test scores may not necessarily be accepted. As the Class of 2030 admissions cycle gears up, what kind of academic chops are necessary to secure admission to Bowdoin?
For the Bowdoin College Class of 2028, an impressive 85.14% of students graduated in the top tenth of their high school’s graduating class. But are grades everything for Bowdoin admission, or is there more wiggle room than one might think? An examination of the data from the past three admissions cycles will reveal the importance placed on GPA in the Bowdoin admissions process. Let’s review.
Bowdoin College Admissions Rate
Is Bowdoin a highly selective school? For applicants to Bowdoin College’s Class of 2029, a mere 6.81% earned admission (setting a new record for the liberal arts college and placing it on par with Ivy Leagues in terms of selectivity). The year prior, for the Class of 2028, this number was 7.13%. For the Class of 2027, 8.02% joined the ranks of Bowdoin’s prestigious student body. Is anyone else sensing a downward trend?

Further Context on GPAs of Bowdoin College Students
Even though the data for the Class of 2029 is not yet out, it doesn’t take Ivy Coach’s famously accurate crystal ball to predict that it will show that the vast majority of Bowdoin applicants last year graduated in the top tenth percentile of their high school graduating classes.
However, Bowdoin routinely rejects applicants with perfect grades, which is why we don’t like to give a cut-and-dry answer to parents who are quick to share their child’s GPA during complimentary consultations with Ivy Coach and want to know if they can get into Bowdoin.
Without context, including the high school attended, the rigor of the student’s coursework, their extracurricular activities, essays, letters of recommendation, etc., we don’t have enough pieces to the puzzle to make that determination based solely on GPA.
After all, if Bowdoin admissions officers were solely using GPA data to determine who gets in and who doesn’t, they’d wind up with a pretty dull class, don’t you think?
Can You Get into Bowdoin College with a Low GPA?
So, is there indeed room for students with less-than-perfect GPAs on Bowdoin’s campus? It’s possible, but it’s not probable. Sure, the student whose parent is a major donor or who was recruited to be the star quarterback might have an advantage despite poor academic performance. But for the average student reading this college admissions blog, you’re better off banking on good grades and test scores to do the heavy lifting, alongside the other qualitative aspects of your application.
