What application should you use when applying to University of California schools? The UC Application, of course! California has always done things a little bit differently than the rest, and the University of California system is no exception. In order to earn admission to any one of these world-renowned public colleges, you must apply through the UC Application. Those in the thick of the college admissions process probably know the ins and outs of The Common Application, but the UC Application is a whole different beast. What the University of California Application Is Not

Before we dive into the unique aspects of the UC Application that you should know about before applying, we’d better review what common elements are not included. None of the UC schools require you to submit letters of recommendation — nor will they even read them if you do! The same goes for SAT or ACT scores. While many colleges have gone test-optional, forwarding the misleading claim that if you don’t submit test scores, you’ll be at no disadvantage over those who do, we’ve got to give it to the University of California. They’re not in the business of wasting anyone’s time! Even if you submit test scores, they won’t consider them — every UC school is entirely test-blind.

So breathe a sigh of relief. To get into a UC school, there’s no need to scramble for last-minute letters of recommendation or sit for grueling standardized tests. But don’t throw in the towel just yet! There are still some curveballs they throw applicants’ way.

The UC Personal Insight Questions

Beyond the extensive real estate the UC Application gives to applicants for their activity descriptions (students have more room to write than on The Common App.), the real meat and potatoes of the UC Application are the Personal Insight Questions. Keep in mind that you only have to answer four of these eight 350-word responses. Let’s take a look at Personal Insight Questions from this previous admissions cycle:

1. Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes or contributed to group efforts over time.

2. Every person has a creative side, and it can be expressed in many ways: problem solving, original and innovative thinking, and artistically, to name a few. Describe how you express your creative side.

3. What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and demonstrated that talent over time?

4. Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced.

5. Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?

6. Think about an academic subject that inspires you. Describe how you have furthered this interest inside and/or outside of the classroom.

7. What have you done to make your school or your community a better place?

8. Beyond what has already been shared in your application, what do you believe makes you a strong candidate for admission to the University of California?
