Further Context on GPAs of Amherst College Students

While we await the official data for the Class of 2029, it’s safe to assume that most of those who secure a spot at Amherst boast impressive academic records, often with 4.0 GPAs. This is in line with the rigorous standards of other top-tier institutions. We at Ivy Coach would confidently speculate that all Amherst admits to the Class of 2029 had a GPA over 2.5, with 90% or so exceeding 3.5.

However, Amherst routinely rejects applicants with perfect grades (it’s not just about having top grades), so we refuse to give a definitive answer to parents who are trigger-happy and throw out their child’s GPA during complimentary consultations with Ivy Coach and want to know if they can get into Amherst. Without context, including the high school attended, the rigor of the student’s coursework, their extracurriculars, essays, letters of recommendation, etc., your child’s GPA is only one small piece of a much bigger puzzle.

Can You Get into Amherst with a Low GPA?

Let’s back up for a second. While it may seem improbable, it is indeed possible to gain admission to Amherst College with a less-than-stellar GPA. It’s important to remember that many students accepted without exceptional grades have other stand-out qualities that can roll the dice in their favor. Amherst College might even consider institutional needs, such as a star athlete or a student with parents who are major donors, when evaluating applications (yes! we dare point out that colleges like Amherst are indeed businesses!). However, the data clearly shows that Amherst has no interest in students who did not graduate in the top half of their high school graduating class. So lower academic standards only keep the door to admission open to a certain point.
