St. John’s School

St. John’s School is a college preparatory school located in the River Oaks neighborhood of Houston. With a highly selective acceptance rate of around 20% and a student body in which 50% identify as people of color, St. John’s School is widely considered the best of the best among Houston private schools. Legend has it that former President George W. Bush even applied to join this distinguished academic community and was rejected! While there is a ton of hype surrounding St. John’s School and a star-studded list of famous alumni to its name, these factors do not always translate to elite college admissions competitiveness.

Carnegie Vanguard High School

Carnegie Vanguard High School, located in Houston’s Fourth Ward, is the only Vanguard program in the Houston Independent School District, meaning all of its students are considered “Gifted and Talented,” and all must take Advanced Placement courses as part of this magnet school’s curriculum. With an academic model centered on seminar-style discussions and a faster-paced classroom environment, Carnegie Vanguard requires students to complete at least 10 AP courses prior to graduation. CVHS has a roughly 13% acceptance rate for its 200 enrollment slots each year, making it the most competitive public school in the Houston area. Students identified as Gifted and Talented through testing are placed in a citywide lottery system for admission to CVHS, a system that favors low-income and underrepresented minority students.
