So how could it possibly be considered one of the most prestigious schools in the Bay Area, you ask? Because The Nueva School is among a particular class of private schools that forgo typical metrics of academic achievement to deemphasize internal competitiveness and lessen students’ stress. However, to earn admission, students must score well on an IQ test in addition to standardized tests.

Henry M. Gunn High School

Highly recognizable in the Bay Area for its academic excellence and highly competitive student culture, Henry M. Gunn High School is one of two public high schools in Palo Alto. With a somewhat troubling reputation for fostering poor mental health among its students, Gunn High School has recently taken proactive measures to strengthen its mental health resources without compromising its academic standing. Officials at this school set a maximum recommendation of two AP courses per semester, although Gunn students seeking to supplement their education can, of course, take online AP coursework and sit for AP exams with the school’s approval at the end of the school year.
