Yale University has released its admissions statistics for the Class of 2025. In all, 46,095 students applied to the New Haven, Connecticut-based institution between its Early Action and Regular Decision rounds — marking an increase of 33% from applications to the Class of 2024 when 35,220 students applied to Yale. Of the applicants to the Class of 2025, 2,169 earned admission. Yale’s overall admission rate for the Class of 2025 stood at a record-low 4.62% (if your calculation is off by a few hundredths, always look to the Questbridge admits who sometimes aren’t included among Early Action admits). To put this admission rate in historical perspective, this same figure stood at 6.5% for the Class of 2024, 5.9% for the Class of 2023, 6.3% for the Class of 2022, 6.9% for the Class of 2021, and 6.3% for the Class of 2020. So to suggest that Yale’s admission rate dropped substantially for the Class of 2025 would be an understatement. And just who did earn admission to Yale’s Class of 2025? Breakdown of Yale’s Admits to the Class of 2025

As Mark Dunn reports for Yale News in a piece entitled “Yale College admits 2,169 applicants from record applicant pool,” “Students admitted to the Class of 2025 represent all 50 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and 72 countries. They will arrive as graduates of more than 1,600 secondary schools and their intended majors include 79 of Yale’s undergraduate academic programs. Amelia Davidson adds in a piece for The Yale Daily News entitled “Yale’s acceptance rate drops to 4.62 percent amid record applicant pool,” “‘The young people we met through the application process have experienced an unbelievable amount of change, disruption, and hardship this past year,’ Dean of Undergraduate Admissions and Financial Aid Jeremiah Quinlan wrote in a press release. ‘But their resilience, leadership, service to their families and others, and commitment to their academic pursuits have been truly remarkable. Our newest students will bring an extraordinary range of experiences and identities, insights and ambitions, talents and intelligences to Yale.'”

Yale Should Release Data on the Percentage of Students Who Earned Admission Without Scores

And that’s all well and good. But notably absent from the Yale University Dean of Undergraduate Admissions and Financial Aid’s quote and the school’s press release on the admits to the Class of 2025 is any data whatsoever on the percentage of students who earned admission without test scores. Admissions officers love to get up on their pulpit and tout that applicants without test scores really do have the same odds of admission as applicants with test scores under “test-optional” admissions policies. But until admissions czars like Jeremiah Quinlan release the numbers, it should all go in one ear and out the other. Show don’t tell, Mr. Quinlan. We say it to students in their college admissions essays. We say it to you today. The book on the Yale University Class of 2025 admissions statistics is not closed until the percentage of students who earned admission without test scores is released.
