Admissions statistics are out for the Princeton Class of 2022. In all, a record 35,370 submitted applications to the Princeton, New Jersey-based institution that ranks #1 in the latest “US News & World Report” college ranking. Of this pool, a pool that has doubled for the university over the last fifteen years, 1,941 students earned admission. This marks an overall admit rate of 5.5% — markedly lower than the 6.1% overall admit rate of just a year ago. As our regular readers may remember, 5,402 of the 35,370 applicants chose to apply to Princeton in the Single Choice Early Action round. 799 of these students earned admission back in December. So you bet it’s easier to get into a school like Princeton during the Early Action round as compared to the Regular Decision round.

Breakdown of the Princeton Class of 2022

As reports Princeton’s office of communications in a press release about the incoming Princeton Class of 2022, “Of the applicants, 14,273 had a 4.0 grade point average, and 17,692 had scores of 1,400 or higher on the two sections of the SAT. The applicant pool included students from among 11,126 high schools from 170 countries. Students receiving offers of admission to the Class of 2022 come from 48 states, plus Washington, D.C., Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, with the largest representation from New Jersey, followed in order by California, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Florida and Virginia. International students represent 12 percent of the admitted students and are citizens of 77 countries, including China, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Greece, Guyana, Haiti, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Morocco, Libya, Norway, New Zealand, Oman, Pakistan, Somalia, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Venezuela and Zambia.”

49.5% of admits are men, while 50.5% are women. 53.4% self-identified as students of color. Legacies account for 11.2% of admits, while 17% of admits are first-generation students — students who will be the first in their families to attend college. 64.5% hail from public high schools. 23% of admits are eligible to receive federal Pell Grants. 24.8% of admits indicated a desire to study engineering — of whom 48.3% are women. Note how that last statistic continues to rise at America’s elite universities year after year. We love to see that!
