Princeton Faces Federal Inquiry

The Trump administration, which has previously attacked Harvard and Yale’s admissions process for alleged discrimination, is now setting its sights on Princeton.

File this one under irony. The Trump administration has launched a probe into racial bias at Princeton University. The administration has argued that Princeton’s own admission of racism at the institution is both “shocking” and “serious.” Of course, this news should not come as any surprise to our readers since the Trump administration has — for years now — been going after Ivy League universities for allegedly discriminating against just about anyone they can think of, including supporting Students for Fair Admissions in their case against Harvard University for allegedly discriminating against Asian American applicants in the admissions process. But it’s not as though the Trump administration is actually hellbent on rooting out racism against minorities at these institutions. Rather, the administration is using these groups as pawns in the hope of ending Affirmative Action. Put simply, the Trump administration seeks to end what they perceive as discrimination against white applicants in admissions.

Princeton Kicks Back at Trump Administration

As Collin Binkley reports for ABC News in a piece entitled “Princeton faces federal inquiry after acknowledging racism,” “Princeton said Thursday that it will respond to the department and looks forward to showing that its actions have been consistent with federal law, and ‘also with the highest ideals and aspirations of this country.’ ‘It is unfortunate that the Department appears to believe that grappling honestly with the nation’s history and the current effects of systemic racism runs afoul of existing law,’ the university said in a statement. The department cited several passages in university President Christopher Eisgruber’s letter detailing efforts to combat systematic racism. It raised concerns over his acknowledgment that racism persists at Princeton ‘as in our society,’ and his acknowledgment that racist assumptions from the past ‘remain embedded in structures’ of the university.”

The Ulterior Motive of the Administration’s Probe of Princeton

Earlier this year, President Trump chastised Princeton on Twitter for removing former President Woodrow Wilson’s name from its public policy school. The school removed Wilson’s name because of his racist policies that were as Princeton’s Eisgruber declared at the time “consequential even by the standards of his own time.” In short, it’s just a tad bit ironic that President Trump criticized Princeton for removing the name of a racist former U.S. president from its public policy school but his administration is also probing the school for its systemic racism. Could the Trump administration have an ulterior motive here? Could this all be a ploy to attack the wonderful, vitally important racial diversity at Princeton and at all of our nation’s elite universities? Hmmm…
