This chart of historical acceptance rate data was drawn from Cornell’s online archive of Common Data Sets. It demonstrates in no uncertain terms that transfer applicants are admitted to Cornell at a higher rate than first-year applicants, as the transfer acceptance rate has exceeded the first-year rate every year for the past 11 years for which we have data. 

Over the past five admission cycles, an average of 12.35% of applicants who applied to transfer to Cornell had their wish granted, versus only 8.06% of first-year applicants during the same period. And no, this data does not include students admitted through the Guaranteed Transfer program, in which a small number of students each year are offered a guaranteed slot at Cornell the following year if they meet specific requirements during their first year at another institution. We are highly critical of this program, as it forces students to uproot their lives from any given institution. Students who choose to apply to transfer to Cornell after their first year, on the other hand, do so of their own volition and are not strung along by this misguided policy.

Why Cornell Respects Transfer Applicants

You might be wondering why transfer students have an easier time getting into Cornell than first-year applicants. You’d probably be surprised to learn that transfer students applying to elite schools across the country actually tend to have better odds than applicants straight out of high school. And the reasoning behind this phenomenon is actually quite sound: transfer applicants round out the diversity of a student body and can be admitted without adversely impacting a school’s standing on college rankings.

Huh? How are these things related? Let’s back up. Transfer applicants typically come from underrepresented backgrounds not commonly found on elite college campuses. They’re more likely to be first-generation, low-income, students of color, or veterans of the armed services. Admission officers cherish the opportunity to admit students with these backgrounds who enrich and diversify their campuses. This accounts for some of the preferential admissions treatment given to transfer applicants.

The other half of this equation is that transfers are data ghosts, meaning their admission doesn’t require reporting academic statistics to The Common Data Set, which in turn informs such things as college rankings. So even if a transfer admit is a C student, their performance isn’t factored into the overall academic profile of the student body, and thus admissions officers have a get-out-of-jail-free card when admitting these students. That’s the second half of this admissions boost.
