If you’ve stumbled across this post, chances are you’re curious about Early Decision / Early Action admission statistics for one of the University of Chicago’s four Early rounds. Here’s the only problem: UChicago keeps its Early admissions statistics locked up tighter than Fort Knox. No, they’re not available in university press releases, nor can such data be gleaned from the University of Chicago’s Common Data Sets. But that’s not where this story ends.

Here’s what we do know: UChicago admissions officers have a thing for Early Decision / Early Action applicants. Such applicants, who put it all on the line to gain admission to UChicago and, in the case of Early Decision, make a binding commitment to attend if accepted, have demonstrated their interest to the greatest extent possible. And yes, despite what University of Chicago admissions officers may lead you to believe, Demonstrated Interest is a crucial variable used to distinguish between applicants. And who better demonstrates their interest in attending than those students who are willing to forgo admission to other schools for the chance of attending this Chicago-based private research university?

Early Decision admits (including admits to UChicago’s new “ED 0” round — more on that later!) drive up the school’s yield rate. Yield rate describes the proportion of students who are admitted to a school that ultimately attend, and the University of Chicago holds the crown amongst elite universities for the highest yield, even beating out Harvard University. Suffice it to say that Early Decision and Early Action applicants experience a significant admissions boost in the UChicago application cycle, and these types of admits end up forming a considerable proportion of each incoming class. 

Still, it would be great if the University of Chicago would actually release the data that would substantiate what we all know to be true.

A Look Back on the University of Chicago Class of 2029

Unfortunately, we don’t have any data to flesh out the composition of UChicago’s Early admits to the Class of 2029. Or the Classes of 2028 or 2027, for that matter. This data would typically be proudly touted by UChicago admissions officers seeking to highlight how selective their admissions process is and just how much interest they can generate among prospective applicants, but for whatever reason, these numbers can’t be found anywhere. Not even in the University of Chicago’s Common Data Set, which is a federally mandated data-reporting initiative that most colleges opt into for the sake of transparency. Alas, with UChicago, no dice.

UChicago’s New Early Decision Round for 2025-2026 Applicants

Last year, the University of Chicago introduced a new Early Decision 0 (ED 0) round called Summer Student Early Notification (SSEN). This allows high school seniors to apply by October 15th and receive admissions decisions by Halloween, giving them peace of mind well before other schools. If rejected, they can still apply to other universities through binding Early Decision by November 1st.

However, the ED 0 round is only for students who have completed the UChicago Pre-College Summer Session Program. While participation can significantly boost admissions chances, it may not be worthwhile for students unsure about attending UChicago or applying to other highly selective schools, as these institutions may perceive a prior commitment to UChicago negatively (yes, admissions officers are known to be this petty!).
