PreMortem™ for High School Seniors

Ivy Coach offers a PreMortem application review for seniors. It’s often not for the faint of heart.

If you’re a high school senior, you’re just a few weeks away from Early Decision / Early Action deadlines. That’s right. November 1st is inching closer and closer. So, if you’re freaking out, unsure if your essays are expressing what they should be expressing, if your activities are demonstrating a powerful, singular hook rather than the dreaded well-roundedness, if you’re applying to the right school choice in the Early round, it’s not too late to start correcting mistakes…unless, of course, you’ve already submitted your application(s). If you have not yet submitted your Early Decision / Early Action application(s), what we recommend is Ivy Coach’s PreMortem.

Ivy Coach’s PreMortem is a one-hour application review. Does one play in a real basketball game before scrimmaging with the team or sing in a production before a dress rehearsal with the whole cast? Of course not! Ivy Coach’s PreMortem is that very scrimmage, that very dress rehearsal. It’s a chance for a former Ivy League admissions officer to go through each section of your Common Application and your supplement(s) to let you know what works, what doesn’t work, and what needs to change to improve your case for admission to the school(s) of your dreams. Maybe you inserted your social security number on the Common Application, implying you’re applying for financial aid (even though so many colleges tell you they’re need blind, most are not). Maybe you write a Personal Statement about sports, music, community service, your grandparents, or travel. Maybe your activities are all over the place. Maybe you didn’t demonstrate interest to the college on the supplement (even if you’re applying Early, they want to know you want to go there for the right reasons). It’s all addressed in Ivy Coach’s PreMortem.

And, yes, it’s called a PreMortem for a reason. When students and parents come to us — for the first time as clients — after deferrals and denials in mid-December, they’re coming to us for a PostMortem. It’s a time to find out what went wrong and what needs to change to optimize their case for admission in Regular Decision. But those students are playing with a hand tied behind their backs because they already played their Early card. As we’re a just a few weeks away from this year’s Early Decision / Early Action deadline, students have not yet played their hand. The PreMortem is an opportunity to improve that hand.
