It might be too soon to say, as the data are still forthcoming. Let’s review what we do know: For admission to Northeastern’s Class of 2028 (the most recent class for which Northeastern publicly reported admissions data), 3,466 high schoolers applied in the Early Decision I and Early Decision II rounds. 1,492, or 43.05%, were selected for admission, a much higher acceptance rate than what has been recorded in past cycles. All told, there has been a fair amount of variation in Northeastern’s ED I and II acceptance rates, ranging from a low of 27% to a high of 51%. The fact of the matter is that this makes it far harder to predict how the Class of 2030 fared or future applicants will fare in the admissions process (the data for the Class of 2030 hasn’t yet been published).

Breakdown of the Northeastern Class of 2030 Early Decision Admits

According to a report by The Huntington News, “Applying via ED has become an increasingly popular option for students applying to Northeastern. Since 2015, the number of early decision applicants has grown by 660%, according to Northeastern Chancellor and Senior Vice President for Learning Ken Henderson’s annual report.” This spike in interest can be attributed to many things: the increasing competitiveness of Northeastern’s Regular Decision round, Northeastern’s surge in the rankings of the US News & World Report “Best Colleges” list, or perhaps simply because word has gotten out that Early Decision applicants stand a far greater chance of earning admission than their Regular Decision counterparts.

And why do Early Decision I and II applicants get in at a higher rate (the proof is in the pudding: compare the 43% admission rate in last year’s admission cycle to the 5.2% overall acceptance rate that same year)? Because that’s how you demonstrate interest, a key factor in the admissions process that Northeastern does not want you to know about! Early applicants are highly enthusiastic about attending and willing to forgo admission to all other schools for a shot to join campus. Wouldn’t you want to admit these types of students if you were a Northeastern admissions officer? And, yes, ED I applicants even enjoy an advantage over ED II applicants. After all, ED II applicants may have applied elsewhere during ED I round and admissions officers tend to be less lenient during ED II since they can already see their full Regular Decision applicant pool (they admit at a higher rate when they’re more insecure).
