Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University has released its supplemental essay prompt for the 2026-2027 college admissions cycle. Applicants to the Virginia Tech Class of 2031 will be required to respond, in addition to The Common Application’s Personal Statement, to the Ut Prosim Profile, which is the fancy way Virginia Tech admissions officers refer to their supplemental essays. This supplement consists of four prompts, each requiring a response of 120 words or less. And, as is the case with all elite colleges, it is well-advised to go up to the word limit in your responses, as anything less could run the risk of coming across as lazy or uninspired.

2026 – 2027 “Ut Prosim Porfile” Virginia Tech Required Short Essay Prompts

So, what are the contents of the Ut Prosim Profile, and how should applicants hoping to attend Virginia Tech plan their responses?

1. Virginia Tech’s motto is “Ut Prosim” which means ’That I May Serve’. Share how you contribute to a community that is important to you. How long have you been involved? What have you learned and how would you like to share that with others at Virginia Tech?

In the brief 120 words allotted for this response, you should reflect on your involvement in a community related to the pursuit of your singular hook. Your singular hook is the pursuit, passion, discipline, cause, or topic that you’ve (hopefully) incorporated across your Personal Statement and activities section, A.K.A. the one that represents how you spent your free time during high school. So, if you devoted a ton of time to a local advocacy organization or cause in your community, you should write about a specific anecdote from your time with this organization, one that demonstrates the intellectual and personal stakes of this work. If your niche is chemistry, write about the extracurricular that marked a turning point in your love of the discipline, and so on and so forth.

But that’s just the first half of the prompt. For the second half of this response, you should write about how you’ll specifically share what you learned from your involvement with this community with others at VT. And how should you do so? By getting involved on campus, of course! In other words, this second half of the prompt amounts to a Why College question for which you should respond with a well-researched set of examples of the various resources and opportunities you’d like to get involved with at VT to apply the lessons you learned in the first half of your response. Yes, this means every sentence here must be peppered with proper noun specifics of activities, organizations, research opportunities, traditions, groups, etc. that you can only find at VT and VT alone.

2. Have you had an experience when you or someone you know were not being included? Did you reach out to anyone for assistance, direction, or resources? Were you able to affect change and/or influence others? Did this experience change your perspective and if so, how?

This response is as much an opportunity to demonstrate your creative writing skills as it is probing for an anecdote about a time you or someone you know was left out. In your response, strive to tell a heartfelt story that uses all of the conventions of narrative writing to move your application reader, including dialogue, characterization, setting, and resolution. VT doesn’t want you to write about the experience of being excluded in the abstract. Instead, they want concrete details, told with the sort of adult perspective that few high school students can muster.

And don’t neglect the last part of this prompt, where you’re asked to explain how this experience changed your perspective. Virginia Tech wants to see that you can react to complex and challenging situations with grace and critical reflection, digesting them into lessons that will serve you well on campus. Don’t be afraid to be candid here, and be sure to demonstrate your ability to disagree with others without being divisive or assimilating perspectives that differ from your own.

3. Share a time when you were most proud of yourself either as a role model or when you displayed your leadership. What specific skills did you contribute to the experience? How did others rely on you for guidance? What did you learn about yourself during this time?

Once again, Virginia Tech wants to ensure that the students it admits are genuine human beings behind all that STEM acumen. This prompt is also best tackled with a specific anecdote that demonstrates you have the holistic qualities that so often fly under the radar at technical institutions: humility, leadership, empathy, patience, and a willingness to play well with others.

But this prompt lays out bait that, unfortunately, many students will take. Here’s how you shouldn’t respond: by writing about the time you almost scored the winning point in a sports match but learned about the power of teamwork in the process. That would be utterly cliché. So would an essay describing how you demonstrated that hard work and perseverance lead to academic reward or recognition, which is just plain old bragging. Instead, strive to think outside of the box, and if you can relate the anecdote back to your singular hook, even better.

4. Describe a goal that you have set and the steps you will take to achieve it. What made you set this goal for yourself? What is your timeline to achieve this goal? Who do you seek encouragement or guidance from and how do they support your progress as you work on this goal?

If we at Ivy Coach told you this is a “Why College” prompt in disguise, would you believe us? While you need not focus this response on a topic of academic inquiry you will pursue at Virginia Tech or a research topic you’d like to explore, you should certainly outline a goal that you will be able to pursue by leveraging the specific tools at your disposal at VT. So, if you’d like to remedy the sea level rise affecting your neighborhood, write about the research institute, study group, or advising structure you’d take advantage of at Virginia Tech to assemble the toolkit you’ll need to address this issue once you graduate. If you’re seeking to develop your fluency in a coding language, write about the mentor, relative, or group who pushed you to practice every day, and then describe how you will rigorously continue this work at Virginia Tech.

No matter the topic you choose, strive to ground your writing with concrete details that show, rather than tell, you are someone who can achieve anything you set your mind to.
