2026-2027 Vassar College Supplement: Essays and Optional Reflection

Vassar College has released its supplemental essay prompts for the Class of 2031. This year, students applying to Vassar are directed to respond to one of two prompts in 300 words or less and have the option to upload a piece of media of their choice into “Your Space,” which is a unique component of the Vassar application that we’ll review below. We’ll also touch on how to best approach the Vassar writing supplement to optimize your odds of admission to this elite liberal arts college.

Required Essay Prompts

To start things off, Vassar asks applicants to respond to one of the following two prompts in 300 words, but prefaces them with the following:

We would like to get to know you better, especially on a more individual level. In replying to either prompt below, you are welcome to touch on any unique ability or aspect of your background – be it your race/ethnicity, socio-economic background, religious tradition, gender, geographic area that you have been raised in, personal interests, etc. – that demonstrates how you may contribute to Vassar.

Whereas most schools shy away from invoking such explicitly DEI-based language in their supplemental essay materials, Vassar has no such qualms. And we at Ivy Coach applaud them for it! But as for the actual prompts, they read as follows:

1. At Vassar, we aim to foster an inclusive community through our philosophy of engaged pluralism. Engaged pluralism is rooted in “the conviction that collaborating across differences is necessary for social transformation and critical for the well-being of any community and its members.” In short, we believe it’s our differences that make us stronger. Tell us a little bit about an important part of your identity and how it has shaped your life and/or interactions with others.

If there were ever a college supplemental essay prompt more steeped in the Roberts Loophole, we haven’t seen it! For those of you who don’t know, the Roberts Loophole is an exception carved out of the 2023 SCOTUS ruling outlawing the use of race-based Affirmative Action in college admissions, allowing for writing about race and identity in college application essays to be weighed in the admissions process. In other words, students whose lives have been shaped by difference, whether through race, religion, or any of the other categories Vassar outlines in the preamble to this prompt, should absolutely respond to this prompt and write about those differences. But simply stating this difference doesn’t go far enough. Strive to move Vassar to root for you with the strength of your storytelling!

2. Vassar is a diverse community that inspires positive change through open inquiry, deep dives into society’s most difficult challenges, and collaborative problem solving. We care deeply about one another, the communities that have forged us, and the community we build together on campus. Tell us about the community (or communities) you come from and how it has shaped your lived experiences and identity.

This prompt, on the other hand, seeks to understand the context of the applicant’s background, specifically by describing communities that have had a formative impact on them. In navigating your response to this question, you should highlight a community that has shaped your high school experience, and no earlier, as Vassar admissions officers would rather not read about your experiences from childhood. If you can describe a community with an intellectual slant, such as the local immigrant center you volunteer at that led you to think more deeply about national identity and borders, or the lab where you assisted research into a topic that you’re deeply passionate about, all the better!

To put it simply, this prompt gives applicants the opportunity to show how they’ve pursued their singular hook in a key community they’ve spent time in. Your singular hook is the highly unique, often local, and deeply personal pursuit you’ve devoted most of your high school years to, which should ideally form the narrative throughline of your entire application.

Keeping this hook in mind, let’s move on to the next, and most unique, part of the Vassar supplement:

Optional “Your Space” Box

“Your Space” is Vassar’s attempt to break from the standard form of the college supplement: a multimedia box on the writing page of the Vassar tab of the college application in which applicants can upload pretty much anything. But even though it’s technically optional, any Vassar application wouldn’t be complete without uploading something to Your Space, so it should be treated as a requirement. Here are the instructions:

Your Space is your opportunity to allow the Committee on Admission to learn something about you that you have not addressed in another section of the application. For example, in the past, applicants have shared poetry, short stories, cartoons, digital images of art projects, photography, and collages, and/or links to videos, and short films. It is your space, so if you choose to complete it, send something that is a reflection of you!

So, how does your singular hook come into play here? Well, the piece of media you upload should drive it home, of course! If you’re the student with a passion for wildfire prevention, you might consider uploading a series of before-and-after images of wildfire destruction in your hometown. If you’re the art history nerd, it would behoove you to upload a graded art history paper you received an A on at school. And if you’re an aspiring filmmaker, by all means upload that (school-appropriate) short film you made! You get the picture.
