2026-2027 UW-Madison Essay Topics and Questions

The University of Wisconsin-Madison has released its supplemental essay prompts for the Class of 2031. Students applying to the University of Wisconsin through the school’s internal application portal must supply an essay of at most 650 words in place of the Common App Personal Statement, while all UW-Madison applicants, Common App or not, must respond to an additional essay prompt probing Why College and Why Major specifics. Here’s the inside scoop on how you can ensure the essay(s) you submit to this top-rated national research university have the power to earn an acceptance letter.

University of Wisconsin Application Portal Essay

Students applying to the University of Wisconsin via its own internal application portal must respond to the following essay prompt in up to 650 words.

Each student is unique. Please tell us about the particular life experiences, talents, commitments, and/or interests you will bring to our campus.

The vast majority of applicants will likely submit at least one college application through The Common Application this year. If you are one such student, you need not submit your UW-Madison application through the University of Wisconsin portal, and therefore need not worry about this prompt. And just in case you are keen on submitting your application this way, you can simply recycle your Personal Statement here and call it a day. This prompt is incredibly open-ended to account for the many students who will do exactly that.

And just in case you’re not using the Common App for your remaining applications and genuinely need fresh material for this prompt, consider brushing up on Ivy Coach’s strategic advice for penning a competitive Personal Statement, as it is entirely applicable here.

Why University of Wisconsin/Why Major Hybrid Essay

Tell us why you would like to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In addition, please include why you are interested in studying the major(s) you have selected. If you selected undecided please describe your areas of possible academic interest. (650 words or fewer)

This hybrid prompt encourages applicants to write about why they want to attend UW-Madison in general and, in particular, why they want to pursue their intended major or majors. In the 650 words allotted for your response, you should fill each and every paragraph with specifics plucked from your research into the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The most competitive students will weave a compelling narrative of what their time on campus could look like: from engaging with a specific research opportunity, toiling away in the lab, meeting with an adviser for an honors project, attending an affinity group after classes, and rounding it all out with a healthy dose of traditions and festivities associated with student life on campus.

Note, however, that we did not mention course titles, individual professors, or trivial facts like “small student to faculty ratios,” “interdisciplinary academic culture,” or “the presence like-minded peers” as worthy specifics worth citing in this essay. Such details are either prone to change from year to year or could apply to any number of universities. In other words, only include the enduring institutional and academic specifics that make UW-Madison one of a kind in your response. And if you’re thinking of applying without an intended major, think again. Every competitive application to this elite national university will have an intended major that serves as a jumping-off point for the ideas articulated in this essay, or what we at Ivy Coach would term a “singular hook,” which is the discipline, cause, art form, or passion you’ve devoted the most time to during your four years in high school.
