The University of Washington has released its supplemental essay prompts for the Class of 2031. Or should we say, released a single supplemental essay prompt, one that is exclusive to students applying to the UW Honors Program. While there’s no university-wide supplemental essay response required for admission, students applying to the Interdisciplinary Honors pathway must respond to one 450-word prompt probing academic interests.

2026-2027 UW Honors Program Essay Topic

The following 450-word essay is required of students applying to the UW Honors Program, which emphasizes interdisciplinary learning and academic culture.

We want to know why you are excited to push your education outside the areas of academic learning with which you are most comfortable.

To help us understand your enthusiasm for exploring different ways of thinking and learning tell us: What do you pay attention to? What is a unique lens through which you see the world? How does that connect to your current interests and future curiosities?

This multi-part question is, in essence, an opportunity for you to articulate the interdisciplinary dimensions of your singular hook. And what’s your singular hook, you ask? It’s the unique pursuit, topic, cause, discipline, or passion that you’ve explored at length during your high school career. Loyal readers of Ivy Coach’s admissions blog know that the most competitive applicants to the nation’s elite colleges possess a singular hook that forms the narrative throughline of their applications. In this case, you should begin your response with a graceful and succinct articulation of how your singular hook first manifested as something you were paying acute attention to.

Let’s say you intend to major in robotics or computer science. Weave a compelling narrative of the first spark of curiosity that brought you to this discipline, whether it was in a computer lab, during an online deep dive, or while witnessing the wonder of a new technology. But be warned: if you describe an experience from before high school, your application reader will probably glaze over with disinterest. Admissions officers only care to get to know you as a high school student. Anything earlier should be treated as scorched earth.

What were the first details you noticed about your singular hook that gripped your attention? After devoting a few sentences to this sentiment, devote some thought to the ‘unique lens’ part of the response. How are you blazing new ground through the pursuit of your singular hook? In your response, be sure to show rather than simply tell. Don’t just insist that your study of art history has the potential to change the field. Illustrate this fact through a compelling anecdote that exemplifies how you see things differently. What disciplines did you merge during your pursuit of this topic, and how do you intend to continue to experiment with interdisciplinary learning as you continue to ask and answer questions related to your singular hook?

Now’s your time to get starry-eyed and think big picture. Given the resources and opportunities available at the UW Honors Program, how would you continue to feed your curiosity related to your intended major (which should itself be an offshoot of your singular hook)? Imagine the inquiries you will see through in college and beyond.
