The University of Virginia has released its supplemental essay prompts for the 2026-2027 admissions cycle. In addition to The Common Application’s Personal Statement, applicants to UVA’s Class of 2031 must answer one essay question, but only for students applying to the School of Nursing. Otherwise, the UVA application is devoid of supplemental essays, continuing a trend set by last year’s makeover of the UVA application. We at Ivy Coach have never been afraid to call out UVA for asking applicants one of the most inappropriate questions of any of our nation’s elite universities, but we also aren’t afraid to hold such schools accountable for stripping applicants of the chance to make the most compelling case for admission possible. 

So, what are this year’s essay prompts for Virginia’s flagship university?

2026-2027 University of Virginia Essay Topics and Questions

School of Nursing Required Essay Prompt

Students applying to the School of Nursing must answer the following prompt in 300 words or less:

Describe a health care-related experience or another significant interaction that deepened your interest in studying Nursing.

As is the case for students applying to any other college at an elite university like UVA, prospective nursing students had better have a singular hook that they present as a game plan for engagement on their future campus. In the case of nursing, that singular hook should reflect how the student wants to make an impact on the healthcare industry by taking advantage of nursing-related resources and opportunities at UVA.

This prompt is an opportunity to do just that, via a compelling anecdote that demonstrates your knowledge of, passion for, and commitment to the nursing profession.

What’s Missing From the University of Virginia Supplement This Year

In the wake of the United States Supreme Court’s ruling outlawing Affirmative Action, America’s colleges have had some practice in maneuvering around not being able to lawfully consider an applicant’s race in the college admissions process. Some have adjusted to this new admissions climate by capitalizing on a loophole penned in the majority opinion by Chief Justice John Roberts, which provides an opportunity for applicants to discuss how their race has impacted their lives in supplemental essays.

Two years ago, UVA had a 250-word supplemental essay question that did just this: gave applicants the opportunity to take advantage of the Roberts Loophole and reflect on how their identity has impacted their academic trajectory. One didn’t need to reflect on race in their response, as any form of identity could have been tackled within the guideposts of that open-ended question. But as of the 2025-2026 cycle, no such question exists.

It would appear that UVA has, in an attempt to appease President Trump, who has spearheaded anti-DEI initiatives across elite universities, thrown out the baby with the bathwater and bowed to pressure to get rid of any mention of identity in their application. Shame on UVA for doing so! The Roberts Loophole is perfectly lawful, and it gives applicants the chance to take control of their admissions destiny with a compellingly told story. 

UVA’s Optional Essay Probing Legacy Status is Also Absent This Year

For years, UVA required students to respond to a question probing their relationship to current or former UVA affiliates, a question which we at Ivy Coach have decried as incredibly inappropriate and anachronistic in this contemporary age of elite college admissions. As of last year, it would appear UVA heeded our calls. Why? Because this question is totally absent from the UVA supplement! Good riddance!
