The University of Rochester has released its 2026-2027 admissions essays for applicants to the Class of 2031. In addition to The Common Application Personal Statement, applicants to the University of Rochester are directed to respond to one required essay prompt of 250 words or less. Those interested in conducting research during their time at the University of Rochester must outline these plans in 20 words or less, and those applying to one of the university’s many dual degree programs must submit an additional essay in no more than 250 words.

In all cases, it is well-advised to write up to the word limit for any and all submitted essays, as anything less could be interpreted as a lack of interest. So, without further ado, what supplemental essays are presented to the University of Rochester applicants to the Class of 2031?

2026-2027 University of Rochester Required Essay Prompts

The following prompt is required of all applicants:

1. The University of Rochester is a place where curiosity and creativity meet. How will you combine our academic flexibility and co-curricular opportunities to create an experience that reflects your interests and ambitions?  (250 word limit)

*The University of Rochester discourages the use of AI to compose application essays or short answer responses. The effect often stifles an applicant’s authentic voice – a key element of what we hope to hear within their writing.

This prompt probes the Why College and Why Major specifics that have drawn you to the University of Rochester in the first place. You’ll need to do your research before you respond, and come armed with a handful of enduring institutional specifics that you’ll reference as you weave a compelling portrait of yourself on campus. And when we say enduring specifics, what we don’t mean is anything that could conceivably describe another school, such as interdisciplinary academics or small class sizes, or individual professors or courses, as these details are subject to change from semester to semester.

Instead, strive to capture the ineffable qualities of the University of Rochester experience through the prism of the activities, events, traditions, institutes, opportunities, advising structures, and the like that you’ll take part in if granted admission. Each and every sentence in your reply should be jam-packed with these details and should underscore the narrative set forth in the rest of your application, A.K.A., the singular hook that weaves its way through your activities section, Personal Statement, and U of R supplement.

For those of you who don’t know, the singular hook is the topic you’ve devoted the most time to in high school, which should ideally form the common thread linking every aspect of your application. Think of it like the backstory to your intended major. As you include academic and extracurricular details in your response to this prompt, remember that each should emphasize how you’ll pursue your singular hook on campus.

The singular hook also comes into play in the following short-response prompt for any applicant who answers ‘yes’ to the question: “Are you interested in pursuing research while enrolled at the University of Rochester?”:

What field/area of study are you interested in researching? (20 word limit)

In the brief space allotted for your responses, you should put forward a cogent, layperson explanation of the academic dimensions of your singular hook.

Dual Degree Program Essay Prompt

The following essay response is required for any student applying to one of the many dual degree programs on offer at the University of Rochester:

What relevant experiences or insight have led to your interest in this particular program? Describe how Rochester’s resources – facilities, faculty, peers and research – will meet your academic and personal ambitions. Describe how you see yourself contributing to the challenging field you want to enter as a Rochester graduate.

As a general rule, we at Ivy Coach do not advise our students to apply to combined dual-degree programs, as the admissions processes for such programs are often far more competitive than those for traditional programs. This prompt is a great example of this hesitation on our part. In your response, you must not only articulate the Rochester specifics that draw you to the program, without overlapping with anything already mentioned in the required essay prompt above, whilst also describing the vision you have for your career post-Rochester (A.K.A., at least five years from now!). It’s a tall order, one that many high school students simply don’t have the foresight to articulate with grace and clarity.
