The University of Richmond has released its 2026-2027 admissions essays for applicants to the Class of 2031. In addition to the Common Application Personal Statement, applicants to the University of Richmond are directed to respond to one required essay prompt of 350 to 650 words or less from three potential prompts. Which prompt is the best choice for you, and how should you navigate building out a strategic response that will make your application reader root for your case for admission? Let’s review.

2026-2027 University of Richmond Required Essay Prompt

Students applying to the University of Richmond must choose one of the following three prompts to respond to in 350-650 words.

1. Richmond is a community that strives to be relentlessly welcoming. Tell us about a time you made a space better for other people by helping them feel welcome, heard, included, or supported.

The University of Richmond doesn’t want to admit students who don’t play well in the sandbox with others. In your response to this prompt (one that should absolutely use all or nearly all of the 650 words allotted to you, as anything less could be misconstrued as a lack of enthusiasm on your part!), don’t commit the cardinal sin of college admissions essays by telling rather than showing your point. In other words, don’t simply state that you are someone who sets others at ease, helps all voices be heard, can disagree without dividing, or collaborates well with others. Instead, your goal here is to convey an anecdote or series of anecdotes that conveys your positive qualities through action and critical reflection on these actions.

And don’t be afraid to highlight an instance in which there was conflict or disagreement. Admissions officers value students who have an (increasingly rare) capacity to meet in the middle with those who might have differing opinions or backgrounds. While you should steer clear of any incendiary topic that could demonstrate close-mindedness, consider including an anecdote about building a bridge with someone, or sticking up for someone in the face of an injustice, big or small, that you witnessed. But it’s not just important to give the play-by-play of this moment or moments. It’s just as important to critically reflect on them and demonstrate that you can digest your lived experiences with maturity, perspective, and with an eye to the lessons that you’ll carry forward with you.

Choose this prompt if you have a memory under your belt of a time you had a genuine, interpersonal impact on those in your community (think local, not global) and mustered up leadership skills to improve the lives of others.

2. Richmond students turn ideas into actions. Tell us about a time you learned by doing, making, building, testing, helping, or leading and what that experience taught you about yourself, the world, or the kind of impact you want to have.

Whereas the first of these prompts focuses on bridge-building and connecting with others in your community, this prompt assesses your ingenuity, leadership, and work ethic in a more applied setting. In your 650-word response (again, all 650 words should be used up here by the student who really means business about attending Richmond), your primary goal here is to convey the passion and enthusiasm that you hold for your singular hook, which is the discipline, pursuit, cause, or topic that you have pursued during high school, and which you intend to continue to pursue in college. Think of it as the intellectual thread that ties together your main extracurricular activities and your intended major. All students applying to elite colleges should strive to put forward such a hook, and while the Personal Statement is typically where it’s articulated at length, Richmond gives you an additional opportunity to do so here.

So, without overlapping with anything you’ve already mentioned in your Personal Statement, here you should illustrate the depth of your commitment to this hook with a specific anecdote or set of anecdotes of primarily academic, intellectual, or extracurricular importance. This prompt is the right fit for you if you feel there is still more you’d like to cover about something you did during your high school career that demonstrates your intellect, curiosity, and willingness to carve out your own opportunities. But it’s not just about highlighting this specific thing. You should also strive to reflect on what this experience taught you about yourself and the kind of student you want to be in college.

If you assisted with research at a local community college, reflect on the implications of this work if you were to continue pursuing it. How would it make the world a better place, and what lessons from this experience would you carry forward into future research? If your part-time job as an usher at the theater unlocked your passion for the dramatic art form, how will this passion continue to burn as you develop into an adult? Your response should reflect both the gracefulness of your creative writing and your commitment to something bigger than yourself.

3. Richmond’s mascot is the Spider. Just as you are unique, this singular mascot represents over 52,680 unique species of spiders. Tell us about the communities, experiences, or ambitions that have shaped you into the unique person you are and how you will make your mark as part of a Spider community.

This two-part prompt seeks both an origin story about the unique circumstances that have shaped you and the “Why College” specifics that draw you to the University of Richmond. For the first half, you might consider writing about the underrepresented race or religion that shaped your background and thus allows you to invoke the Roberts Loophole (which is the exception carved out of the 2023 SCOTUS ruling outlawing Affirmative Action that allows for experiences of difference related to race to be written about in college application essays and thus weighed in the admissions process). But even if your identities don’t fully fall under this umbrella, you should still put forward a heartfelt anecdote that captures the specificity of your background, whether intellectually or interpersonally, and serves as an on-ramp for the University of Richmond specifics you’ll cite in the second half of your response. Lay the groundwork by writing about the goals that will shape your time on campus.

Now that you’ve contextualized your love of the University of Richmond with your personal background, it’s time to demonstrate the research you’ve done into the U of R and cite a plethora of campus-specifics that you’ll take part in once you arrive. Think: activities, events, traditions, resources, and opportunities that can be found at the University of Richmond and the University of Richmond alone. What you shouldn’t mention here are specific classes or professors (which are subject to change from year to year) or generalities that could apply to any school, such as small class sizes or a spirited student body. Your goal should instead be to describe a day in your life on campus in which you participate in the many unique facets of the University of Richmond experience that will enable you to realize the goals and ambitions you outlined in the first half of your essay.
