The University of Florida has released its 2026-2027 admissions essays for applicants to the Class of 2031. In addition to The Common Application Personal Statement, applicants to the University of Florida are required to submit one essay of 250 words probing extracurricular commitments, and three optional essays of 250 words each. Unlike the vast majority of so-called “optional” essay prompts on college essay supplements, in which it’s almost always advisable to respond to them at length to demonstrate your enthusiasm for the school to which you’re applying, these optional essays should be treated as just that: optional. We’ll unpack why below.

2026-2027 University of Florida Required Essay Prompt

All students applying to the University of Florida must submit a response to the following prompt in up to 250 words:

1. Please provide more details on your most meaningful commitment outside of the classroom while in high school and explain why it was meaningful. This could be related to an extracurricular activity, work, volunteering, an academic activity, family responsibility, or any other non-classroom activity.

This is a Why Singular Hook-style prompt that encourages you to expound on the primary use of your time outside the classroom. The singular hook is essentially the main topic, pursuit, discipline, passion, or cause that has shaped your high school career. It should ideally be reflected in your intended major, and should have academic, intellectual, or altruistic stakes oriented around making the world a better place in some highly specific way. While the Personal Statement is the typical domain for articulating the depth of your singular hook, the University of Florida includes this prompt to give students an additional opportunity (or a first opportunity, for those who have made the mistake of focusing their Personal Statement on some unrelated topic!) to explain why their hook feels so meaningful to them.

In your response, you should provide your reader with an anecdote from your time pursuing your singular hook, one that illuminates how and why this work has a personal connection for you and how it has shaped you as a learner or member of your community. Don’t just simply state that you are deeply connected to this thing, whatever it may be. Demonstrate this point with a specific instance that uses all of the conventions of storytelling to pull on the heartstrings of your reader, including dialogue, characterization, setting, and a healthy degree of critical reflection that conveys you have a unique perspective that you’ll bring forward to the University of Florida campus.

2026-2027 University of Florida Optional Essay Prompts

The following three prompts are optional, although all have a 250-word limit:

1. Do you have any employment or family obligations that limit your participation in extracurricular activities? If so, please describe.

This question seeks to understand any gaps in your resume or extracurricular commitment that can be explained by family obligations or a part-time job. Your response to this prompt is indeed optional, as you should not submit something just for the sake of submitting something if you do not actually have any obligations or jobs that have meaningfully detracted from your ability to pursue your interests. However, if there is something that has gone unaccounted for in the rest of your application, such as a sick relative you take care of, a part-time job that soaks up a ton of your time, or a unique circumstance that has compromised your extracurricular potential, write about it here!

And just as is the case with all writing you submit to elite colleges, don’t just state that you have these commitments. Share a compelling anecdote that illustrates how these commitments have shaped you!

2. Have you participated in or been assisted in your college preparation and search by programs outside of classroom, such as Educational Talent Search, Take Stock in Children, Upward Bound, Boys and Girls Club, etc.? [If so,] Please provide the name of the program, details/benefits of your involvement, and how long your experiences continued.

Once again, this prompt is only to be completed by those to whom it applies. And unlike the other supplemental essays on this application, this one doesn’t call for storytelling. A simple summary of your involvement and a list of what you contributed to these organizations (without bragging or boasting, as this could come across as unlikeable) suffice.

3. Is there any additional information or extenuating circumstances the Admissions Committee should know when reviewing your application?

Very few students are good candidates for submitting this additional information. University of Florida admissions officers will be annoyed if they have to read your essay on the COVID-19 Pandemic here, or hear about something frivolous, like how your school didn’t offer AP Psychology even though you desperately wanted to take it. If you do choose to respond, the only subjects worthy of option include major disruptions to your high school academic trajectory (such as illnesses, natural disasters, conflicts), additional context for the lack of resources at your underprivileged high school (such as no APs offered whatsoever, not just one or two), or an explanation of a lapse in your transcript that you weren’t able to cover anywhere else in the application. Any other musings will make you seem like a nuisance!
