University of Colorado Boulder Supplemental Essay Prompts: 2026-2027
2026-2027 University of Colorado Boulder Required Essay Prompt
University of Colorado Boulder has released its 2026-2027 admissions essay for applicants to the Class of 2031. Other than The Common Application Personal Statement, there is only one supplemental essay for applicants this year, with an upper word count limit of 250. As is the case with all college essay supplements, you should aim to write as close to this upper limit as possible, as anything less may be considered to be laziness or a lack of enthusiasm on your part. And who could blame CU Boulder admissions officers for making this assumption? When college admissions competition is at an all-time high, why should this prestigious research university admit the student who couldn’t be bothered to turn in a full-fledged essay?
But now that we’ve instilled the importance of reaching that 250-word limit, what should actually go into this response? Here’s how you can strategically position yourself for CU Boulder submission through your response:
What do you hope to study, and why, at CU Boulder? Or if you don’t know quite yet, think about your studies so far, extracurricular/after-school activities, jobs, volunteering, future goals, or anything else that has shaped your interests.
This is a Why Major essay that asks you to expound upon your singular hook. Ever heard of the phrase “singular hook?” If not, strap in. This is the specific passion, topic, pursuit, cause, or discipline that has (ideally) shaped your high school career. It’s the theme that ties together the activities on your activities list and your Personal Statement, and typically informs what you intend to major in. In your 250-word response to this essay, your intention is to convey the depth of this hook, A.K.A., the extent to which you’ve pursued this particular interest, and to show how this pursuit will seamlessly continue at the University of Colorado.
While the (poorly worded, if you ask us) framing of this question seems to imply you should only share about your past experiences if you’re unsure what you’d like to study at CU Boulder, the reality is that the most competitive applicants will share both a bit about the specific resources and opportunities available on campus that will allow them to take their pursuit of their intended major to the next level and the particular way that these CU Boulder specifics will build on and complement what they’ve already done so far to pursue their field of study (A.K.A., how their singular hook). The twofold approach will show you mean business. And it goes without saying, but you should absolutely apply with an intended major in mind.
To put it simply, your goal is to weave a compelling tale about how the University of Colorado, and only the University of Colorado, will uniquely allow you to build on past academic and intellectual experiences through the research opportunities, advising structures, conferences, academic organizations, etc., on campus. In other words, do your research into what’s specifically available to you as a CU Boulder student and nowhere else. And no, the specific courses you intend to take or the faculty you intend to learn from do not count as appropriate school-specific details, as these are subject to change from semester to semester. Instead, your focus should be on the enduring, longstanding facets of your intended major and its extracurricular infrastructure that will enable you to pursue your singular hook on campus. What will it look like as you go from one activity to another? Paint a vivid picture.
