Trinity College Supplemental Essay Prompts: 2026-2027

This is William Burges' original plan for Trinity College's campus.

2026-2027 Trinity College Optional Essay Prompt

Trinity College has released its 2026-2027 admissions essay for applicants to the Class of 2031. This year, all applicants may submit an essay of up to 300 words about their personal background. But should “optional” really be treated as optional in this context? Of course not! The fact of the matter is that Trinity admissions officers won’t treat applicants who fail to submit this essay as serious contenders for admission. And they won’t appreciate those who submit an essay that falls well below the 300 words allotted for the response.

In short, if you really want to earn admission to this prestigious liberal arts college, you had better submit a 300-word response. But not just any response. Here’s how you can distinguish your application by penning an essay filled with details that will position you as a competitive applicant to Trinity:

We invite students to write an additional optional essay that focuses on your specific interest in Trinity College. In 300 words or less, please write about the following prompt.

The identities you claim, the challenges you face, and the successes you enjoy shape the background for your college experience to come. What is an aspect of your background that you are excited to share and/or explore as a member of the Trinity community and why?

This prompt is first and foremost an opportunity to demonstrate your storytelling abilities. And it is relatively open-ended for a reason. Trinity admissions officers have given you the building blocks to share an anecdote that lets them into some aspect of your personal, academic, or intellectual background, and they want to separate those students who can demonstrate their maturity, perspective, and intellect from those who cannot. Thus, it is essential that you avoid the cardinal sin of college admissions essays in your response: telling, but not showing.

In other words, no matter the topic you choose, your goal is to illustrate the personal qualities conveyed by this topic with specific examples or anecdotes. Yes, this means you should employ all the tricks of creative writing here, including dialogue, characterization, and, if possible, a sense of humor.

As far as the topic you should choose, aim to pick an anecdote drawn from an experience related to your singular hook, which is the specific cause, passion, pursuit, or discipline that informs how you’d like to use your college education. For most students, it’s simply the backstory to their intended major or the common theme found in their activities and Personal Statement. Without touching on anything you’ve described in this Personal Statement (as that would be redundant), pick an anecdote related to your singular hook that illustrates you have the qualities that admissions officers look for in applicants, namely a capacity to learn from difficult experiences, a willingness to work in a team, a thirst for knowledge and curiosity about the world around you, and the ability to reflect on these qualities.

So, if your hook relates to your love of biology, describe a meaningful experience you had in the classroom or while conducting research. If it’s public policy, describe the moment your passion was ignited by a local issue you wanted to address. Or, if you’d like to take a different approach and take advantage of the Roberts Loophole for underrepresented minority applicants (which is the exception to the 2023 SCOTUS ruling outlawing Affirmative Action that permits race to be written about in application essays), you might describe how your unique background, race, identity, or lived experience gave you the grit and tenacity to overcome a challenge.
