2026-2027 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Required Essay Prompts

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has released its supplemental essay prompts for the Class of 2031. Students applying this year must respond to two required essay prompts, one in 300 words or less and one in 250 words or less. You should always strive to hit the maximum word count in your responses to any and all college supplemental essay prompts, and RPI is no exception. But what should you write about to optimize your odds of admission? Let’s review below.

The following essay prompts are required of all Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute applicants:

1. Please briefly elaborate on one of your extracurricular activities or work experiences. (300 words)

This prompt represents your chance to wax rhapsodic on a specific activity related to your singular hook. And what’s your singular hook, you ask? It’s the unique topic, discipline, passion, or cause that has formed the basis of your high school career. Think of it as the suite of activities that have prepared you to pursue your intended major. RPI wants to admit students who will hit the ground running on campus and immediately pursue their academic and intellectual goals by leveraging the resources and opportunities available to them. And the students most likely to do so are those who have already taken the initiative to commit themselves to what they’re interested in.

The activity or work experience you write about here can take many forms. You might consider writing about the field research you assisted with after reaching out to a local professor in your intended field of study, and how a particular moment unlocked your passion for the discipline and made you realize it’s what you want to devote your education to. You might write about how your experience as a cashier at a pet store gave you the background you need to pursue biology to its fullest potential at RPI. Or, you might simply reflect on a time you went down a research rabbit hole after school after having learned about something that piqued your interest.

No matter which way you swing it, the name of the game is to put forward a narrative. Strive to move your application reader with the strength of your storytelling. In other words, illustrate the experience you choose with an anecdote. Don’t simply state that you participated in something. Demonstrate this fact!

2. Why are you interested in Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute? (250 words)

This prompt represents a standard Why College essay that should be lush with RPI-specific details that apply to this institution and this institution alone. What student groups, job opportunities, laboratories, research fellowships, campus events, and student traditions would you participate in if given the gift of admission? Yes, this means you’ll have to thoroughly research all of the resources and opportunities on offer at Rensselaer, and inject tons of proper nouns into each and every sentence you pen.

But not all college specifics are made equal. Specific courses and professors, while common details included in such prompts submitted by most students, do not cut it. The professor you’re writing about could be gone by the time you enroll, and the course you intend to take could be nowhere to be found. Instead, focus on the enduring specifics that don’t change from year to year, such as the advising structures, longstanding facets of campus culture, recurring events and activities, and student groups that have been around for years.

And once again, show, rather than tell, how you intend to get involved! Anyone can list out details that they copied and pasted from the school’s website. Few can weave a compelling story of a day in their life on campus, one in which they go from one activity to the next.
