Occidental College Supplemental Essay Prompts: 2026-2027
2026-2027 Occidental College Optional Essay Prompt
Occidental College has released its 2026-2027 admissions essay for applicants to the Class of 2031. Other than The Common Application Personal Statement, there is only one optional supplemental essay for applicants this year. But just because it’s optional, does that mean you don’t have to worry about it? Of course not!
Occidental College admissions officers, as with admissions officers at all highly selective colleges, don’t want you to take them at their word that their supplemental essay is truly optional. Any student worth their salt will submit a response, as anything less could be (rightly!) interpreted as a lack of enthusiasm or just plain laziness. And that’s not all. The same goes for applicants who don’t write up to the word count limit, in this case, 250 words for Occidental’s sole admissions essay.
But now that we at Ivy Coach have hopefully instilled the resolve in you to tackle this essay, how should you go about responding in a way that optimizes your odds of admission to this prestigious liberal arts college? Let’s review.
Why are you applying to Occidental? Why do you think Occidental is the right place for you to pursue your interests?
This prompt is a classic example of the “Why College” question. With only 250 words to make your case, most sentences should highlight something unique to Occidental College. Your aim is to inject the enduring, institutional specifics that make Occidental Occidental into every thought you share. But not all potential details are made equal. Some will actually do more harm than good if you include them. For example, avoid defaulting to listing course names or faculty members, as these aren’t truly strategic “Why Occidental” specifics. Remember, classes and instructors may change each term, so it’s best not to focus on details that might not be relevant once you arrive on campus. And also don’t write about any details that could feasibly apply to any other school, such as the clichés of small class sizes and student-professor ratios, a spirited student body of diverse peers, or world-class libraries and facilities. Dare to describe what these facilities look like, where students congregate during study sessions, what’s for sale at the campus cafe, what research was conducted in the laboratories, or what unique fixture of the residential system supports student well-being. In other words, dare to be specific, which means hop online to do your research.
In your response, strive to show, rather than tell, how you’ll make an impact on campus. Focus your answer on a vivid snapshot of your daily life at Occidental that showcases your engagement with the campus beyond the classroom. Highlight lasting aspects of the Occidental experience, such as traditions, signature events, beloved gathering spots, student resources, and extracurricular opportunities, that set the college apart. And since this is the only supplemental essay question asked by Occidental, you should also devote some real estate to the explicitly academic resources and opportunities that draw you to the college and that will allow you to capitalize on the study of your intended major. At a school with as small a student body as Occidental, admissions officers are in no position to admit a student who doesn’t have a game plan for getting involved once they’re on campus. This essay serves as your opportunity to lay out this game plan and to highlight how Occidental, and only Occidental, can satisfy your desire to explore your passions and interests, or as we at Ivy Coach would call it, your singular hook.
