Harvey Mudd College Supplemental Essay Prompts: 2026-2027
Harvey Mudd College has released its supplemental essay prompts for the Class of 2031. Students applying to Harvey Mudd must respond to two required essay prompts: one of 500 words and one of 250 words. The first of these prompts is a relatively straightforward essay topic about community involvement and experiences making an impact on a particular issue, or what we at Ivy Coach would term an essay about your singular hook. The second essay, however, veers from the typical script of elite college essay supplements and asks applicants to describe a time they were in need and asked for help.
How should you approach each prompt to optimize your odds of admission to this prestigious member of the Claremont Colleges consortium?
2026-2027 Harvey Mudd College Optional Essay Prompt
1. The problems that Harvey Mudd College students hope to tackle are shaped by their experiences, values, and communities. Through our intentionally interdisciplinary curriculum and our mission to develop “a clear understanding of the impact of their work,” Mudders develop the skills needed to address these complex challenges and contribute meaningfully to society.
Share how an experience you’ve had or community you belong to has shaped the kinds of problems you want to solve and the impact you want to make. (up to 500 words)
The first step in preparing your 500-word response to this essay (and yes, you should use up every bit of that maximum word count!) starts with doing some digging on the Harvey Mudd website through the links so helpfully included in the prompt. To show that you are genuinely interested in attending HMC, you should strive to repackage the specific aspects of the interdisciplinary curriculum and Harvey Mudd mission in your own words, as they relate to your singular hook.
The singular hook is the specific, often local, and totally unique cause, passion, pursuit, or topic you’ve (hopefully) devoted a ton of time to during your high school career. It should come up in more or less every aspect of your Harvey Mudd application, as it provides admissions officers with a roadmap for how you will use your time on campus. In other words, this prompt is a golden opportunity to do just this: demonstrate your passion for your hook through a compellingly told anecdote about how you sought to solve a problem in your community through the pursuit of your hook.
And you don’t need to think of a problem with huge proportions here. Harvey Mudd will be touched by your commitment to something as small in scale as a traffic problem in your neighborhood you took action to address, research you helped conduct at a local community college, or the community theater you joined to help invigorate the arts locally. But whatever the topic, make sure you reflect on this experience or community through the prism of the values, both academic and mission-based, that Harvey Mudd points to in the prompt above.
2. No one succeeds alone, and at Harvey Mudd College, no one expects you to. In and out of the classroom, HMC students are encouraged to embrace challenges, collaborate with one another, and ask for support when they need it.
Describe a time when asking for help made a difference in your work or wellbeing. What led you to reach out, and what did you take away from the experience? (up to 250 words)
Here’s where things get interesting. Most colleges usually don’t dare to probe difficult questions and sticky situations like this. In fact, trauma-dumping in your supplemental essays is typically a major red flag to most elite schools. But here’s the thing: this prompt is no exception! So don’t take it as carte blanche to describe a major mental health episode, a time you “crashed out,” as the kids say, or a time a death or illness in your family stopped you in your tracks. As touching as such subjects might be, they don’t represent the sort of thing Harvey Mudd will want to see here.
Instead, treat this prompt as an opportunity to relate an anecdote in which you asked for help during a situation of primarily academic, intellectual, or extracurricular stakes. In other words, steer clear of anything too personal, or that could run the risk of making you seem like a volatile student. Don’t be afraid to showcase a time you got something wrong, needed someone’s assistance, or faced a setback. Just make sure this anecdote demonstrates your triumph over the situation, in which you found common ground, discovered a solution, or got back on top of your game.
