Case Western Reserve University Supplemental Essay Prompts: 2026-2027
Case Western Reserve University has released its 2026-2027 admissions essays for applicants to the Class of 2031. The only applicants given the opportunity to submit supplemental essays are those applying to Case Western’s Pre-Professional Scholars Program (PPSP), which grants conditional admission to the School of Medicine (for an eight-year MD program) or the School of Dental Medicine (for a seven-year DDS) alongside admission to the undergraduate school. There’s no general supplement for all Case Western applicants.
2026-2027 Case Western Pre-Professional Scholars Program Essays
As a general rule, we at Ivy Coach are hesitant to recommend that anyone apply to such accelerated dual-degree programs, as they tend to have far lower acceptance rates than undergraduate programs.
But if your dream is to attend Case Western’s PPSP, don’t let us deter you from submitting stellar essays that contribute to a competitive application. In fact, below we’ll unpack how to best respond to these prompts to strategically position yourself for PPSP admission.
By applying to the Pre-Professional Scholars Program, you are applying to gain admission to professional school earlier than students who apply in the traditional way. Please indicate why you’re interested in your chosen profession. How do you see yourself being particularly suited to this field? What events and/or experiences have led you to your choice? This essay should be between 250 and 500 words in length.
If you’re applying to an accelerated dual-degree program such as PPSP, you had better have a singular hook at the ready. This is the cause, research topic, area of involvement, or passion you have for the field of medicine or dentistry that you should have already begun to explore in high school. The most competitive applicants to PPSP present a singular hook that forms the narrative throughline of their application and serves as a solid indication to the admissions office that they will hit the ground running once on campus, pursuing their chosen field.
As such, this prompt gives you the opportunity to describe events or activities, the ones that you haven’t yet touched on in your Common Application Personal Statement, that highlight how you’ve pursued your singular hook in high school. Perhaps you shadowed a local practitioner and learned a ton in the process. Maybe you assisted with research at a local university on cutting-edge technology in your chosen field. Or perhaps you can describe, with eloquence and perspective, the time you first encountered your passion for this discipline with a compelling anecdote.
Whatever you do, just don’t write about a medical crisis you faced in your family. Such essays, while heartfelt, are utter clichés that will cause your application reader to yawn.
In the college application process, you are constantly prompted for a list of your achievements, awards, and accomplishments. While this information is useful to us, we are interested in hearing more about you. Describe an event, achievement, or experience of which you are particularly proud but that will not show up on a resume, may not garner any recognition, and does not appear anywhere else on your admission application. This essay should not exceed 750 words in length.
This is where things get interesting. If the first prompt probes your pre-professional experience, here’s where you can really describe the holistic, non-professional aspect of your passion for medicine or dentistry. Again, without touching on a medical crisis or aging relatives, both of which are topics your competitors will write about in droves, dare to tread into more original waters. And because Case Western specifically asks that this topic does not touch on anything mentioned in your activities section or Personal Statement, you should definitely steer clear of anything that could be construed as redundant material.
There’s abundant room in the 750 words allotted for this response to describe, with grace and by demonstrating your unique capacity for empathy, a time you built a bridge with someone you had a disagreement with, or a specific but unsung instance in which you strived to make your community a better place. Be creative, and don’t be afraid to take a risk here. Case Western rewards students who have a point of view not found elsewhere in the applicant pool.
