2026-2027 Carleton College Optional Additional Essay Prompt

Carleton College has released its 2026-2027 admissions essay for applicants to the Class of 2031. Other than The Common Application Personal Statement, the Carleton College application has no supplemental essay prompts… with one slight exception. While there are no formal essay prompts, there is an additional information text box with an upper limit of 250 words. Even though completion of this text box is totally optional, with a school as selective as Carleton, it’s well-advised to share more about yourself and your interest in attending in this text box. After all, when 80% of those who apply to this prestigious liberal arts college wind up with a rejection letter, it’s essential to stand out and demonstrate your interest in attending. This additional information section is your key to doing so.

But just any response won’t cut it. Since this “essay” is not strictly required or even a conventional supplement, the last thing you want to do is annoy Carleton admissions officers with an unnecessary or excessive answer that’s redundant with the Personal Statement or otherwise a waste of their time. Let’s review what you should include to make the most of this opportunity to share more with your application reader.

Anything missing? Do you want to share more with us? If so, use this space to fill any gaps you think would assist us in reviewing your application. (Optional, no more than 250 words)

Given how open-ended this prompt is, there are many ways to skin this cat. But no matter which direction you take it in, strive to use all 250 words allotted to you. Most students should take this “anything missing?” prompt as an opportunity to do one of two things: either share more about their personal, intellectual, or academic background, or share why they would like to attend Carleton College in particular. For students opting for the first of these approaches, you should share more about the specific experiences that have informed your singular hook, which is the passion, discipline, topic, or field you devoted your high school career to. And if you’re not sure what your hook could possibly be, think of it as the origin story of your intended major, the thing that you wrote your Personal Statement about, or topic that weaves its way into many or most of your listed activities. So, for example, if you intend to study biology at Carleton, perhaps you could share what initially ignited your interest in the discipline, or describe the specific biology-related issue you sought to address through one of your activities (without overlapping with your Personal Statement, that is!).

The other direction you could take this prompt (or indeed, the hybrid direction that combines aspects of the singular hook) involves citing the Carleton College-specific resources and opportunities you intend to leverage once on campus to make the most of your intended major. Taking this “anything missing?” prompt in this direction means you should aim to inject Carleton specifics throughout the response, specifically those that will enable you to pursue your singular hook on campus. Questions you should consider while formulating your response include: What departmental resources and extracurricular research opportunities related to my intended major could I pursue at Carleton? What events, celebrations, activities, and traditions would shape my time on campus? How could I reach my goals by taking advantage of the niche resources on campus available to undergraduates?

However, proceed with caution, as some details you might consider citing could do more harm than good. For example, generic details that could apply to any school, such as small class size or a diverse student body, should be avoided like the plague, as should specific courses or professors you intend to get involved with, as these are subject to change from semester to semester and thus don’t capture the enduring essence of the institution. Instead, strive to highlight the things that stay the same about Carleton from year to year, including the longstanding organizations, prestigious fellowships, renowned student groups, and ineffable qualities of the campus culture.
