Bryn Mawr College Supplemental Essay Prompts: 2026-2027
Bryn Mawr College has released its supplemental essay prompts for the Class of 2031. Students applying to Bryn Mawr this year must submit a required essay of 250 to 500 words. And any student intent on actually earning admission to this school should submit an essay that goes as far up to the upper word limit as possible, as anything less will put a bad taste in the mouth of the admissions officers tasked with reading a half-hearted response.
But using all the real estate allotted for your response is just one part of the equation. What should go into this supplemental essay to optimize your odds of admission to this proud member of the Seven Sisters consortium of all-female liberal arts colleges? We’ll review how you can plan out a strategic essay that knocks the socks off your application reader.
2026-2027 Bryn Mawr College Required Essay Prompt
Bryn Mawr students bring their authentic selves to campus. What do you know about yourself to be true – and what in your background or experience led you to that truth? (250 to 500 words)
Of all the questions elite colleges are asking applicants this year, this represents one of the most open-ended. There are many different ways to skin this cat. And unlike many other schools of its caliber, Bryn Mawr is not probing into any “Why College” specifics here. In other words, you need not cite any Bryn Mawr-specific details in your response. Instead, it’s all about you and what makes you tick.
Regular readers of Ivy Coach’s college admissions blog likely know what we’re about to say. The best starting point for such an open-ended essay is to write about your singular hook. The singular hook is the academic or intellectual foundation of your college application, the throughline tying together your activities section, Personal Statement, and yes, college supplements. Think of it as the backstory to your intended major, or the pursuit, cause, passion, topic, or discipline that forms the primary use of your free time outside of the classroom. However, even though your singular hook should have an academic or intellectual skew, this isn’t the kind of essay prompt asking you to dive into the granular details that only an insider in this field of study would understand. Instead, Bryn Mawr is challenging its applicants to paint a holistic picture of who they are as people, one best expressed through a specific anecdote tied to their singular hook.
Here’s what we mean: think of a moment you were immersed in this pursuit of yours, a time that your passion was ignited and you felt most fulfilled, whether that’s creatively or intellectually, or otherwise. What made this instance so special, and looking back, what lessons did you learn from it? You might write about an interaction you had with someone in your local community while interning at a company related to your intended major, or discuss how you first came to realize that ecology was what you wanted to study in college while exploring a local nature reserve. You might even consider writing about a challenging experience of adversity or disagreement that highlights your perseverance, willingness to meet others in the middle, or the unique perspective you alone can bring to a college campus.
No matter the subject you choose, show, rather than tell, that you are the type of empathetic, committed, curious team-player that would enrich life on Bryn Mawr’s campus.
