Brandeis University 2021-2022 Essay Prompts

Brandeis asks domestic applicants to respond to one essay prompt on this year’s application (photo credit: Leo Felici).

Brandeis University has released its essay prompts for the 2021-2022 admissions cycle. The Waltham, Massachusetts-based institution asks applicants applying from the United States to answer one essay prompt. The prompt reads, “The Brandeis community is a diverse group of critical thinkers defined by their ability to dive deeper into their learning by questioning, analyzing, evaluating, creating, critiquing and seeking other perspectives. Share an example of how you have used your own critical thinking skills on a specific subject, project, idea or interest.”

But while domestic applicants only have to answer one essay prompt, international applicants are asked to answer two essays. The additional essay prompt for international students reads, “Brandeis attracts students from many parts of the world. As an international student at Brandeis, how would you enrich the campus community? ” So, basically, it’s a Why Brandeis essay yet domestic applicants aren’t asked to answer the prompt.

We can’t think of any other highly selective university that asks international applicants to answer more essay prompts than domestic applicants. It seems Brandeis is trying to ensure that the international students completing their application actually have intentions of matriculating if admitted. After all, why else would they pose a Why College essay only to international applicants? It’s an interesting tactic for sure. It will be interesting to see if other elite universities soon find inspiration in Brandeis’ approach. Only time will tell.
