Babson College has released its supplemental essay prompts for the Class of 2031. Students applying to Babson this year must respond to two essay prompts (though one can be a video; more on that in a moment!). As we review the prompts below, a word of advice: use every last word allotted for your response. The first of the required prompts can be answered in up to 500 words, and the second in up to 250 words, and you better believe that the Babson applicants who wind up with acceptance letters are the ones who go right up to the word count in their responses (or to the time limit, in the case of those who choose to respond to the first of these prompts with a video).

So, without further ado, what is asked of Babson applicants during the 2026-2027 admission cycle, and how should you strategize your responses to optimize the odds of admission?

2026-2027 Babson College Required Essay Prompts

1. The Babson education prepares students to think and act entrepreneurially, preparing them for careers across a variety of industries including business, entrepreneurship, social innovation, and more. Tell us about your interest in studying business, including any relevant experience you have or what your career aspirations are, and how you feel Babson can help prepare you to make an impact in your chosen field of business. (500 words maximum)

We invite you to submit your answer in either essay OR video format. If you choose to submit a video, please limit your response to a 1-minute video, which can be submitted via a shared link to YouTube or another video hosting website. Please ensure your video is set to public and is accessible to the Admission Committee.

This is a pretty standard prompt that hybridizes two themes: Why Singular Hook and Why College.

Before we dive into how to respond, let’s address the elephant in the room: a video response would be a mistake here. The fact of the matter is that 500 words is not equivalent to a 1-minute video in terms of the depth of ideas you’re able to probe with each. In fact, you’d hardly have time to speak 100 words in your response if you decided to submit a video! If 3 minutes were allotted for this option, we would say, “Go for it!” But alas, 1 minute of content will only skim the surface of what’s necessary to really hit this prompt out of the park. If you do choose the video option, however, forego any fancy editing, outfits, props, or the like, and keep it simple.

In your response, you should describe an anecdote or series of anecdotes related to the pursuit of your singular hook, which is the thematic throughline of your application that’s reflected in the pursuit you’ve devoted the most time to in high school. In the case of a business school like Babson, your singular hook should be the business-related topic, discipline, cause, or passion related to your intended major that you can gesture to in this response by describing one activity in particular.

Perhaps it’s the part-time job that taught you the value of an entrepreneurial spirit. Or maybe it’s the internship where you shadowed a local corporate leader and learned about how to meet the economic needs of your community. In any event, use the first half of the 500 words you’re given to describe this activity and tie it to your overarching pursuit of your intended major at Babson.

For the second half of your response, turn to face the future. What Babson-specific resources and opportunities will you leverage during your time on campus to pursue your business-related hook? Yes, this means you must research the institutes, fellowships, organizations, activities, affinity groups, events, and the like that you intend to participate in, and walk your application reader through a day in your life on campus in which you do just that: participate! But take note that the specifics you reference here should capture the enduring spirit of Babson, and not something that could change from year to year, such as individual classes or professors, or something that could apply to any other university, such as small class sizes or interdisciplinary academic culture.

2. A defining element of the Babson experience is learning and thriving in an equitable and inclusive community with a wide range of perspectives, experiences, and interests. Please share something about your background, lived experiences, or viewpoint(s) that speaks to: (1) your commitment to promoting access, connection, or understanding across differences; and/or (2) how you will contribute to and learn from Babson’s collaborative community. (250 words maximum)

Babson wants to admit team players, not students who will shout down their intellectual, ideological, or political opposition. Thus, in your response to this prompt, you should strive to paint a picture of your capacity for empathy and your ability to take in perspectives different from your own and change your mind. And yes, you should absolutely illustrate this point with a concrete example, told with all the attributes of a gripping narrative, rather than simply stating that you “value a diversity of perspectives” or “work well with others.”

The most important rule in any college supplemental essay is to show, rather than tell, the point you’re trying to make. In this case, don’t be afraid to cite a genuine story from high school (and no earlier, as Babson doesn’t care about anything before this time in your life) that demonstrates your bridge-building qualities. And then, to round out your response, turn to the Babson-specific details you’ll participate in on campus that drive home these qualities. What student groups, collaborative research endeavors, and team-based initiatives will you take part in to learn from others and teach them something in return?
