2026-2027 American Required Essay Prompt

American University has released its 2026-2027 admissions essays for applicants to the Class of 2031. In addition to The Common Application Personal Statement, applicants to American University are directed to respond to one optional essay prompt of 250 words or less. However, as with applicants to all elite colleges, those who gain admission to American University will have treated this essay prompt not as an option but as a requirement and will have come as close as possible to the 250-word limit. Anything less risks coming across as a half-hearted attempt.

So, how should you plan out your response to this supplemental essay prompt to strategically position yourself for admission? Let’s review.

American University students identify as changemakers and describe themselves as passionate. Elaborate on a belief, hobby, idea, issue, or topic about which you’re excited. (Up to 250 words)

This prompt helps AU admissions officers screen for students who will bring a genuine passion and willingness to get involved on campus, rather than those who will simply squander their time if given an acceptance (as well as, of course, assessing who can put together a graceful sentence and who cannot). And they’ll make this determination by evaluating the strength of the singular hook conveyed in this response.

But Ivy Coach, what in the world is a singular hook? We’re glad you asked! It’s the specific cause, passion, pursuit, topic, or discipline that should form the narrative and intellectual throughline of your entire application. It’s, in essence, the thing you’ve spent the most time pursuing outside of the classroom during your high school years, and it should ideally form the primary topic of your Personal Statement and be reflected in your intended major.

In this response, American University invites you to expound upon a dimension of this hook that you haven’t yet touched upon elsewhere in your application (A.K.A., in your Personal Statement). And it need not be hyper-academic! If your hook is multilingualism, perhaps you’d like to relate an anecdote about the time you first applied your language skills to assist someone in your neighborhood. If you’re the computer science kid, perhaps you’d like to explain how and why your favorite coding language feels so beautiful to you. Get creative with it, and do your best to tell a story your reader can latch onto for its compelling, personal significance.

If you really want to impress AU admissions officers, consider injecting a few AU-specific details at the end of your response that show how you will continue the pursuit of your hook once on campus. These could be specific organizations you’ll join, research opportunities you’ll apply for, advising structures you’ll benefit from, or activities you’ll regularly do. Walk your reader through a brief day in your life on campus in which you pick up the threads of the passion you described in the first half of the essay and apply these to campus life.

Thus is one of the most important rules of the college supplemental essay: you must show, rather than tell, that you’re a great candidate for admission. Anyone can simply state that they’re excited about forging a life at American University. Few can illustrate this point with specifics, both the kind of stuff you’ve been doing that will lay the groundwork for your time on campus and the Why College specifics that demonstrate what this time on campus will actually look like.
