Companies increased their hiring of fresh-out-of-college grads in 2010. In fact, according to a survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, that figure skyrocketed by 20%. According to the same study, “This apparent bullishness on the hiring front also nearly cuts in half the current number of applicants for every job opening, dropping from 40.5 to 21.1, year-over-year.” And 58% of those candidates who secure internships at a company first end up getting full time employment at that same company.
According to an AP article by Timothy Pratt, “A Bloomberg interview with the association’s executive director, Marilyn Mackes, indicates where some of these jobs are likely to be found: energy, financial services and technology (including Silicon Valley). One employer that won’t be looking for college grads is the government, which is no surprise given widespread local, state and federal budget cuts. The survey itself shows that just over half the employers who responded will be looking for Master’s degrees. The most coveted majors appear to be engineering, business and accounting. (Communications finished a lowly 7th.)”
