Is there a correlation between how far a university’s basketball team advances in March Madness and how many applications that university receives the subsequent admissions cycle? You bet there is. Indeed we’ve been writing about the impact of a school’s March Madness run on admissions figures for many years — beginning with the Cindarella run of George Mason University to the 2006 Final Four. Put simply, generally the further a team advances in March Madness, the more applications that school will receive come November and January. So all you students interested in applying to Duke University, well, it’s best to root against the Blue Devils during the March Madness that precedes your application cycle. You can always root for them after you get in!

Mazel Tov to Indiana Pacer Elijah Stewart of USC

Regular readers of our college admissions blog know we have a love for basketball and since we blog about college admissions every single day, we often find ways to tie in the sport to our writing. Can you imagine writing about college admissions every day? We’ve got to spice things up. So we figured we’d share today the news that the nephew of our dear friend Anthony, Elijah Stewart — a young man who has appeared on our blog numerous times due to his March Madness heroics for the University of Southern California (just think how this young man positively impacted application numbers, the school’s admission rate, and the USC ranking in “US News & World Report” over the years) has signed as a member of the Indiana Pacers. While Elijah wasn’t drafted in Thursday’s NBA Draft, he didn’t have to wait long to sign a contract with an NBA team’s summer league team. He got the call the very next morning. Elijah Stewart is the newest member of the professional team in the state that is the heartland of American basketball and the home of Larry Legend.

While we grew up rooting against the likes of Reggie Miller (his 8 points in 9 seconds against the Knicks still haunts us), Rik Smits, Antonio Davis, Dale Davis, Mark Jackson, Chris Mullin, Jalen Rose, and Detlef Schrempf, we’ve now got some skin in the game and so we’re switching allegiances. Hey, it’s not so hard to give up on the Knicks these days. We always thought that Elijah shot the 3 and played D much like Reggie Miller. He’ll now get to wear a Pacer jersey just like him. Congratulations to the University of Southern California on your four players who have signed with NBA teams and congratulations to USC’s all-time leader in three-pointers made…Anthony’s nephew, Elijah Stewart!
