Did you know that Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda began writing his first musical, the Tony-winning In the Heights, during his sophomore year at Wesleyan University? The first version of the major Broadway hit was staged the following year by Wesleyan’s student theater company, Second Stage. It was the kind of play only a Wesleyan student could write: out-of-the-box with rap and R&B numbers sprinkled among more classic Sondheim-style showtunes. And it was the Wesleyan alumni network that took Miranda to the big state. Two alums, John Buffalo Mailer and Thomas Kail, came to see the play and approached Miranda, offering to produce the undergraduate’s play with the goal of an eventual Broadway run. By enrolling at Wesleyan, Miranda was definitely not throwing away his shot. 

If you’re not a theater person, maybe television is more your speed. Mike White, the creator of The White Lotus, is an alumnus of Wesleyan, where he studied English and theater. The creators of How I Met Your Mother and Mad Men also graduated from Wesleyan, so the alumni network covers the whole gamut of the TV industry, from comfort watches to prestige viewing. And Wesleyan students have the rare opportunity to see their campus rendered in a cartoon if they watch season six of Bojack Horseman, when the titular character becomes a theater professor at the Middletown, Connecticut institution. 

With only 3,000 undergraduate students, Wesleyan University is a small school that ranks number thirteen on US News & World Report’s ranking of liberal arts colleges. The acceptance rate at Wesleyan is 16%, making it a competitive institution. Wesleyan stands out for its unique housing system: its residence halls each maintain their own distinctive character. Malcolm X House remains a residence for students of the African diaspora. It also hosts student groups like the Black Student Union, Muslim Student Union, and the Student of Color Barbeque. The pun-forward Writer’s Block houses students interested in the literary arts where, in addition to shared meals, writing workshops are a staple of residential life. 

Wesleyan Doesn’t Publish Its Students’ High School GPA Statistics

Unfortunately, there isn’t a clear answer to that very good question. Wesleyan has not reported the GPA of its incoming first-year students to the Common Data Set Initiative since 2010. The Common Data Set Initiative is a voluntary effort among colleges to help all of those involved with a student’s transition into higher education.
