UVA Disenrolls Students

UVA has taken bold, decisive action to protect its student body, faculty, and staff from COVID-19 (photo credit: Troy).

The University of Virginia is taking its vaccine mandate very seriously, setting a precedent for other universities across the land to follow. Yesterday, the school that was the vision of Thomas Jefferson disenrolled 238 students for being out of compliance with the university’s very clear vaccine mandate. All UVA students who live, work, or study on campus, after all, are required to be fully vaccinated for the 2021-2022 academic year. It’s a condition of their enrollment. Now, of the 238 students who were disenrolled, apparently only 49 were actually on campus attending classes, while the others’ fall plans were unclear.

As Liam Reilly reports for CNN in a piece entitled “University of Virginia disenrolls 238 students for not complying with university’s vaccine mandate,” “About 96.6% of UVA’s student body is vaccinated, [UVA spokesman Brian] Coy said. Around 1% of students are currently unvaccinated while about 1.3% were allowed to claim religious or medical exemptions, Coy said. ’If you’re unvaccinated, we ask that you wear a mask at all times — indoors or outdoors — whenever you’re around people,’ said Coy. ’Anyone unvaccinated and has an exemption will have to test once a week, we’re starting once a week: That might go up.”Unvaccinated students without exemptions were repeatedly reminded to get vaccinated between May 20 and July 1 to avoid disenrollment, Coy said. ’Students out of compliance received multiple emails, calls, text messages and — in some cases — calls to their parents. Our numbers show that our students responded to this. This means we can have the kind of in-person semester where people can engage in normal ways.’”

We salute the University of Virginia for enforcing strict vaccination mandates. The real college experience has been on hold for nearly a couple of years now due to the COVID-19 pandemic. If students want to get back on campus and sit for in-person courses, live in dorms, and hang out with their friends, they’re going to have to comply with these vital, necessary mandates. UVA has long set a standard in public education. We’re glad to see they’re continuing to set that standard today. Go Cavaliers!
