The University of Pittsburgh has become an increasingly popular destination for high school seniors in recent admission cycles. This state-related research university, which sits somewhere between public and private status (due to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s particular legal structure for certain universities, but that’s another story!), recently admitted students to the Class of 2030. Even though there has yet to be a press release or report giving us the lowdown on these admits, Ivy Coach is here to walk through recent admissions cycles at Pitt to assess the trends likely at play in this most recent cycle. UPitt Class of 2030 Statistics in Historical Perspective

The data for the Class of 2030 has yet to be released to the public, indicating that University of Pittsburgh officials have joined a growing number of institutions in keeping this year’s admissions statistics close to the vest to avoid negative press. But the historical data can fill in some of the gaps. Over the past four cycles, an average of 59,278 students have applied to the University of Pittsburgh per year, with the most recent Class of 2029 setting the record for most applicants during this window at 64,724. An average of 32,241 of these students were admitted per year, resulting in a four-year average acceptance rate of 54.09%.

Counterintuitively, the Class of 2029, despite drawing the most applicants on record, did not produce the lowest acceptance rate on record. That designation goes to the Class of 2026, in which 49.14% of the 53,072 students who applied were admitted. How could this be? Wouldn’t high application volume translate to a lower acceptance rate? Not exactly. In all likelihood, the yield rate decreased in proportion to the increase in applications during this time, meaning that a smaller percentage of admitted students actually enrolled at Pitt each year. This would require the University of Pittsburgh to admit more applicants to offset the lower average interest per applicant.

Profile of UPitt Admits to the Class of 2030

Unfortunately, there’s virtually no information out yet on the Class of 2030, so it won’t be until the 2026-2027 Common Data Set (likely sometime this fall) that any and all questions on the makeup of this group of admits will be answered. When the Common Data Set finally arrives, this year’s geographic, socioeconomic, academic, and racial breakdown of admits will come to light.
