Shame on the University of Miami admissions department! Today, the admissions department sent out an email to its applicants that included a video. In the video featuring the University of Miami Dean of Enrollment Management, Edward Gillis, as well as the rest of the University of Miami admissions counselors, Gillis walks a present across campus. The present is a big, wrapped box. So why did we start this post by saying shame on the University of Miami? Because shame on them for teasing applicants with what could have been a clever way of offering admission but instead was merely a holiday greeting!
In the email to applicants, the University of Miami writes that “the office of admission received a special gift this holiday season.” But do you think applicants hoped inside that box would be the school’s mascot, Sebastian the Ibis? No! Of course not. They hoped that special gift would be you (the applicant). They hoped that special gift would be their application! So shame on the University of Miami for sending an email on December 15th – in the thick of the time in which colleges send admissions decisions – that is merely a holiday greeting!
College applicants are under enough stress in the high stakes game of college admission. Edward Gillis and the rest of the staff in the University of Miami admissions department should have been more sensitive to this before they decided to bombard their applicants’ email inboxes with silly spam videos. The video wasn’t even funny!
