The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is the oldest and arguably most prestigious public university in the United States. Research universities have become increasingly selective in recent years, reflecting a border trend in higher education towards lower acceptance rates and increasing popularity. Since the figures aren’t yet published, we don’t know how many students were admitted to the UNC at Chapel Hill Class of 2030 beyond that 5,903 of 14,931 in-state admits, or 39.54%, were admitted in the in-state EA round. University of North Carolina’s Class of 2030 in Historical Perspective

In a bizarre turn of events, UNC Chapel Hill has withheld any and all data regarding the Class of 2029 EA admits, even as the Class of 2030 data has started to trickle out. The year before, for admission to the Class of 2028, Chapel Hill set a record low EA acceptance rate at 15.34%.

While we don’t yet know how the Class of 2030 out-of-state and international admits have fared, this history would suggest that it’s not too far of a stretch to imagine yet another record-setting year for Chapel Hill. But it’s possible that, as reflected in a recent UNC Alumni Review press release, Chapel Hill is keeping the admissions data close to the vest for recent cycles because of the school’s public perception amidst decreases in campus diversity following the 2023 SCOTUS ruling.

The Demographics of UNC at Chapel Hill’s Class of 2030

Again, we don’t yet know any information on the Class of 2030, including all of the juicy details that colleges typically share in press releases to brag about their incoming class. But they have released such information for the Class of 2029. Let’s examine how the Class of 2029 fared in their admissions cycle.

According to that same press release, students from the Class of 2029 hail from 80 countries, 49 states and D.C., and 98 North Carolina counties. 18% of these admits were the first in their families to attend college. How these numbers will stack up against the newest admits is a question we all will hopefully be able to answer shortly!
