Is Tufts University on your mind? If you applied to join the Class of 2030 and were recently given your admissions decision, we’d sure suspect you’re hungry for more details. Well, you’ve come to the right place. With a highly selective 10% or so of applicants earning admission from a pool of roughly 36,000 applicants this time around, the Tufts admissions cycle for 2025-2026 broke a record for most applicants in a given year, and came pretty close to breaking the record for lowest acceptance rate!

Tufts University’s Class of 2030 in Historical Perspective

Tufts’ reputation and admissions selectivity are on an upward trajectory, and this year shored up this trendline. With the Class of 2030 drawing the highest volume of applicants on record, at roughly 36,000 (specific figures have yet to be reported), admissions officers have reason to celebrate. However, this year’s cohort failed to beat out the Class of 2026’s 9.69% record acceptance rate. But Tufts isn’t the only school out there living in the shadow of the Class of 2026 admissions cycle, as the COVID-19 pandemic artificially drove down acceptance rates that year and has set a tough precedent for many schools across the country.

The Demographic Breakdown of the Tufts’ Class of 2030

A Tufts University press release has listed a few key facts about this round of incoming students with bullet points: 

• 56% of admitted students attend public high schools.  
• 11% are the first in their family to go to college.
• About 15% of admitted students are eligible for a federal Pell Grant.  
• More than 80 students were admitted from Tufts’ host communities of Medford, Somerville, Boston, and Grafton.
• All 50 U.S. states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam were represented.
• Of accepted students from the U.S., 15% are from the U.S. South and Southwest, and 20% from the West.  
• The top six states for admitted students are Massachusetts, New York, California, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Texas. More students were admitted from Texas this year than in any prior year, with a 50% increase in admitted students from the state compared to four years ago.
• 10% of those admitted are international students, representing more than 60 countries.  
• 23% of high schools represented in the applicant pool have not sent an application to Tufts in the last five years, if ever.
• 20% of high schools represented by this class had not had a student admitted to Tufts in the last five years, if ever, as Tufts continues to expand its reputation into new communities.
• About 55% of applicants, and 75% of admitted students, submitted SAT or ACT scores. This represents an increase in score submission from prior years.  

Why Test-Optional Admissions Are Inflating Tufts University’s Admissions Statistics

Tufts is one of many schools to adopt test-optional admissions, a decision implemented in 2020 in response to that pesky little pandemic that so many of us seem to have forgotten about by now. But with the global crisis in the rearview, the policy has remained. What does this have to do with Tufts’ recent admissions statistics?

We at Ivy Coach have long called out colleges for perpetuating the myth that students who apply to places like Tufts without submitting test scores won’t be at any disadvantage, when the opposite is true. Just take that last bullet point listed above as our case in point: despite only 55% of Tufts applicants submitting test scores, 3/4 of the Class of 2030 had test scores. That amounts to a pretty huge advantage exclusively given to test-taking applicants.

Tufts’ record-breaking applicant pools can be partly explained by its test-optional policy, which has inflated the number of students who apply each year, even though students who apply only because they think they can squeak by without test scores are only doing themselves a disservice.
