• But not all GPAs are created equal. Some high schools weigh GPA, meaning they inflate grades in rigorous courses while leaving grades in less challenging courses untouched. Others don’t. Fortunately, elite colleges have no preference for weighted or unweighted GPA. In fact, many of the top private prep schools in the country have recently begun opting out of calculating GPAs to undercut student competition and level the academic playing field. Rest assured that even if your high school does not calculate GPA, you won’t be at a disadvantage over students applying from high schools that do.
• A high GPA is relatively meaningless if you haven’t taken all four core subjects for all four years of high school, nor if you haven’t taken the most rigorous and challenging coursework available to you. Anyone can achieve high grades while taking non-honors courses. Colleges simply won’t care about your academic distinction if you haven’t taken a course load that demonstrates your academic prowess and willingness to challenge yourself.
• To this end, don’t opt for an elective course (even if it’s related to your singular hook or future major!) over a core subject, ever. In fact, colleges would rather see that you double up on math or science (and no, we don’t mean by taking ecology and statistics. We mean taking Biology and Chemistry and Calculus and Linear Algebra. You get the idea?). Electives water down your transcript without instilling any faith in admissions officers that you’ll be able to stay afloat once on campus.
• Remember: admissions officers don’t have amnesia. Uploading your transcripts is enough proof of your academic standing. There’s no need to brag and boast about your GPA or grades on any other part of your application (beyond the Honors and Activities list on The Common App., that is!). Students who flex numbers and academic statistics in their college essays only serve to make themselves unlikable.
