The founders of the T.M. Landry College Preparatory School, Tracey and Michael Landry, owe a debt of gratitude to the people at the center of the infamous college admissions scandal that broke this past spring — even and especially Lori Loughlin. And why? Because it was that scandal — the one involving the bribery of college athletic coaches, cheating on standardized testing, among so much more spearheaded by a disreputable “college consultant” in California — that wiped out T.M. Landry’s own college admissions scandal from the news cycle. Do our readers even remember T.M. Landry’s shocking scandal? If not, let’s refresh your collective memory.
T.M. Landry College Prep Released Videos of Student Acceptances Based on Foundation of Lies
T.M. Landry College Preparatory School, a private school in Louisiana, made headlines on so many occasions when their students — overwhelmingly underprivileged and underrepresented minorities — earned admission to our nation’s elite universities. And why would such college acceptances be newsworthy? Because the school filmed videos of the students learning of their offers of admission. The students’ videos were — naturally — inspiring and they went viral. They were the perfect kind of feel-good Today and Good Morning America videos that invigorated morning show viewers as they went about their early routines. And, as The New York Times later exposed, they were built on a foundation of lies…a foundation of lies that is now of interest to the F.B.I.
The F.B.I. is Now Investigating T.M. Landry
As reports those same New York Times journalists who initially broke the T.M. Landry scandal story, “T.M. Landry College Preparatory School, a private school in Louisiana that garnered national attention for helping underprivileged and minority students attend elite colleges, is under federal investigation over its college admissions practices after disclosures that it cut corners and doctored applications, according to multiple people contacted by the F.B.I. The F.B.I. opened the inquiry after an investigation by The New York Times detailed instances of transcript fraud and physical and emotional abuse at the school…While the scope of the Justice Department investigation is not known, the F.B.I. has discussed T.M. Landry’s college application practices as part of the inquiry, according to one person interviewed by federal investigators who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the case is not public.”
