Regular Decision applications to Northwestern University’s Class of 2023 are on par with last year’s figure. In all, between Early Decision and Regular Decision, 40,577 students applied to Northwestern in the hope of earning admission to the school’s Class of 2023. For the Class of 2022, Northwestern received 40,425 total applications. So after years of major increases in applications, the school only experienced a slight increase in applications this year in Regular Decision — although it should be noted that Early Decision applications were up by 9% year over year as the school received 4,399 binding ED applications this past fall.

Northwestern’s Class of 2023

As reports Zoe Malin for “The Daily Northwestern” in a piece entitled “Number of regular decision applicants ‘flat’ for class of 2023,” “[Dean of Undergraduate Admission Christopher] Watson estimated that the overall acceptance rate for first-year students is expected to be about the same as last admissions season, which was 8.4 percent for the class of 2022. Each graduating class is made up of just under 2,000 students. ‘It’s hard to know right now whether the number is going to be higher or lower,’ Watson said, ‘but it should not be dramatically off.’ Watson also mentioned that the pools of applicants for fall 2018 and fall 2019 are ‘almost identical,’ and that there ‘really was no shift’ in composition. He said most students applied to Weinberg, while McCormick was the second most popular school.”

Northwestern’s International Application Figures Stay Strong

International students continue to apply in droves to Northwestern. The school has not experienced a drop in interest among international applicants, as Malin reports. While many American universities have seen a decline in international application figures under the Trump administration, as we correctly forecasted (with the help of our famous crystal ball) before President Trump took office, our nation’s most highly selective universities — like Northwestern — have suffered no such blowback. As Malin writes, “Watson said he does not know the reason for this, though University President Morton Schapiro has expressed confidence in Northwestern’s ability to attract top-tier international students.” We echo the leader of Northwestern’s confidence!
