Within Vanderbilt’s literary ecosystem, Warren began developing a voice that would result in a highly successful career, culminating in works such as All the King’s Men. 2. Bishop Joseph A. Johnson, Jr.

Bishop Joseph Johnson’s time at the Vanderbilt Divinity School launched his career as a spiritual leader. As the first African American student admitted to Vanderbilt in the 1950s, he studied amid the initial years of the Civil Rights movement. His later role as a trailblazing bishop in the Episcopal Church reflects the Vanderbilt motto: “Dare to grow.” Bishop Johnson would later go on to serve as the second African American on Vanderbilt’s Board of Trustees in the 1970s.

3. Vice President Al Gore

Former Vice President Al Gore’s path to global political prominence began at the home of the Commodores. While studying government and theology at Vanderbilt, first at the Divinity School and then at the Law School, Vice President Gore began working as a journalist in Nashville, exposing corruption in local government. His tenure as a journalist spurred his interest in legal advocacy. Years later, Vice President Gore would be immortalized in the climate change awareness documentary An Inconvenient Truth and would receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

4. Muhammad Yunus

Former Chief Adviser of Bangladesh and pioneer of the microfinance theory of economic development, Muhammad Yunus’s time at Vanderbilt proved central in forming ideas that would later transform global development. While pursuing a PhD in economics in the late 1960s, he developed the theory of microfinance. By extending small loans to underserved populations, particularly women, Yunus confronted traditional banking structures and ushered in a new era of microeconomic policy. His work earned him the Nobel Peace Prize, but its intellectual roots can be traced, in part, to his time at Vanderbilt.

5. Dinah Shore

A major star of mid-20th-century entertainment, Dinah Shore studied sociology at Vanderbilt, where she also began performing in campus events and joined the Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority. She booked her first gigs on local Nashville radio stations and spent her summer break in New York auditioning for radio roles.
