1. Mayor Michael Bloomberg

Yes, he founded a global financial empire and changed the face of New York City during his tenure as Mayor. But did you know that Mayor Michael Bloomberg also studied electrical engineering at Johns Hopkins? Mayor Bloomberg’s technical background informed the data-driven approach he later applied to building Bloomberg L.P. He later served three terms as mayor of New York City. But perhaps most notable to our purposes here, Mayor Bloomberg also made the largest-ever philanthropic donation to a university ever, giving $1 billion to JHU to create a revolutionary tuition-free medical school program. 2. Governor Wes Moore

A Rhodes Scholar, author, and sitting Governor of Maryland, Wes Moore completed his bachelor’s at Johns Hopkins in International Relations and Economics, graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 2001. At Johns Hopkins, he played on the Blue Jays football team for two seasons, chaired the university’s Men’s NAACP branch, and was initiated into the Omicron Delta Kappa honor society and the Sigma Sigma chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha. To top it all off, he’s the first Black governor of Maryland and the third Black person elected to be a Governor in the United States! 3. Wolf Blitzer

If you turn on your TV, chances are it won’t be long before a Hopkins alum will pop up. Iconic CNN news anchor Wolf Blitzer earned a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins’ School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). During his time at SAIS, he studied abroad and prepared for a long career in journalism, and would go on to become one of the most recognizable faces in political news coverage.

4. Rachel Carson

Few alumni have had as profound an environmental impact as Rachel Carson. After completing her graduate studies at Johns Hopkins University, Carson combined scientific training with a gift for writing, ultimately changing public understanding of the natural world. Her landmark book, Silent Spring, exposed the dangers of widespread pesticide use, particularly DDT, and triggered a national conversation about environmental sustainability.

5. Wes Craven

Another famous Wes to grace this list of esteemed JHU alumni, Wes Craven earned his master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University. Craven went on to create genre-defining works like A Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream, both of which incorporated elements of black comedy, cultural commentary, and a deep appreciation for film history. 6. Russel Baker

Russell Baker studied at Johns Hopkins University as a young student before embarking on a career in writing. His initial undergraduate years were cut short by WWII, in which he enlisted in the Navy, but he eventually returned to campus and graduated with a degree in English in 1947. Baker rose to national prominence as a columnist for The New York Times, and his understated humor earned him not one, but two Pulitzer Prizes. His memoir, Growing Up, came to symbolize the plight of an entire generation that lived through to the Great Depression.
